AE should hire someone else with skill and a lower tendency to force players into burlesque, otherwise, AQW will become another cliche online game with forced revealing clothes, like Perfect World and Ragnarok.

Actually, it has nothing to do with Miltons skill. He is an extremely talented artist who, sadly, has a tendency towards drawing revealing women. While I don't really agree with the way he does his armors... Let's just all be glad we haven't seen anything worse.

Re: Female Armors

It's all a matter of taste. Okay so there is a fair bit of skin shown considering it is primarily aimed at children. But it is rated for Everyone over the age of 10, there's no real upper limit on how old you have to be so there are players in their 20s(like me) and possibly 30s. There is a balance that AE has to maintain, draw in new players, keep the old ones happy, and appeal to as many demographics as they can.

Look at some of the heroines of various comics, tv shows etc. Princess Leia kicked butt in a metal bikini, Wonder Woman fights crime in a strapless leotard/battle armour, and yet there is no complaint about them being too revealing even though WW stars in a show aimed at kids alongside other heroines like Black Canary, Power Girl and Zatanna who wear revealing costumes as well. Instead, they are models of female empowerment. But I digress.

On a personal note, I do like some of the female armors like Paladin and Forest Faerie and I wouldn't say no to a few more revealing male armours. What's good for goose is good for gander and all that jazz.

keep the old ones happy

...So AE needs to put emphasis on sexuality to keep people playing...? A bit odd.

Re: Female Armors

Post by Altera on Fri Feb 19, 2010 9:47 am

I probably should have made my previous comment a bit clearer.

New players are acquired through eye catching advertisements, often with female NPCs, as does almost every other MMORPG. Outfits are designed with wide appeal and those in business know that sex sells so attractive females in low cut/skimpy outfits will bring in the punters. Would you buy something advertised by a supermodel or a dirty hobo?

Players are then maintained by offering new items to customise their character look, through quests to farm for gold or the items that drop from various monsters, buying upgrades and ACs. They create outfits which they believe the majority of players would like and go from there. And in many cases after a new outfit has been released, you'll see a lot of players wearing it in the following days or weeks until the new cool one comes out.

With demographic appeal, the one that seems to scream out at first is teenage males, but why have pretty armours unless girls are gonna play? Why bother creating female-only outfits?

Looking at the wiki, approximately half the armours fully cover the female/are exactly like the male counterpart with a couple more with either low cut tops OR thighs showing but not both, so there are plenty of "non-burlesque" options to choose from.

Being a female that plays, I'd say that there is really nothing wrong with what you are all calling revealing. Standards have really changed since 1970. All the American media is talking about are sex scandals and people using racial terms. I'll tell you that this is a very light form of burlesque. Remember, the hero is not a 10 year old! The kids are supposed to be playing as a fairly older character, and forgive me if I saw women usually grow breasts and don't always wear trench coats. If anything, the buffed out male characters are sexist, as no female armor shows any definition of muscle, and makes every woman seem petite and fragile.

You have a good point there I don't think there are very many/any at all female armors that show muscle.

So yeah. I'mma agree in full with Crystal.

Anyway. Fact of the matter is every cheap WoW imitation of a game needs some fan service so that people don't just play WoW instead, and as everyone knows, females are the first to be used as fan service. It's because that's how society rolls.

That one's nasty, I've seen it myself and it's just not okay to do such videos when you're a designer of a game that's for kids.
Too much skin obviously..

You people are trashing the wrong game, most online games end up with female charswearing revealing armour, WHO CARES!
Personally I think most guys dont even give a crap about it, its just the way the armours are drawn, stop making problems where there are none!
If you really want to trash a game for this sort of thing trash City Of Villans, all the female players there are stuck wearing BDSM bondage outfits.

I think I'm going to throw up.

Now back to the topic, I reckon Miltonius draws armors like this because of these three reasons:

1) He's a pervert who no longer has my respect.
2) Nobody has sent a complaint to him yet, which may be why he gets away with it.
3) AE might not care about the way some armors are drawn because it draws in players.
