"Caprica" - Canceled

It's been about a week since the word was official, but the "Battlestar Galactica" spin-off prequel got canceled by SyFy. I'm not sure whether many of you watch it or not, but I'm a huge fan of BSG, and naturally "Caprica".

SyFy's reason for this was that the show wasn't getting the ratings that they wanted. The cancelled news came after SyFy announced yet another prequel spin-off "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome", set between "Caprica" and BSG during the first-Cylon War. (This info is irrelevant unless you actually know about the show.)

An organized effort has began via Twitter, petitions and even the mass-mailing of apples to the SyFy execs. (Showing the fanbase's determination to keep the show on air.)

Also, to add insult to injury, SyFy plans to not even air the final five episodes until next year. ("Caprica used to air on Tuesdays after "Stargate Universe", another spin-off of a major series that aired on SyFy for 10 years: "Stargate SG1")

Irrelevant information aside, do you think that a major station has the right to cancel a show that has a strong fanbase just because it didn't get the ratings as some of it's other shows? And do you think that said station has the right to not even air the remainder of the season until an entire year later? (Note: "Caprica" didn't even finish it's first season.)

I'm personally absolutely livid about SyFy's decision to cancel the show before it's momentum even kicked off. Given a second season, I strongly believe that it would have gotten the ratings SyFy so craved for. SyFy's reason to cancel the show is obviously contradictory to what the fans are doing.

Cold hand of logic here.

Fact of the matter is that if a show's momentum hasn't kicked off after a dozen or so episodes then there's a problem. The first season of the show should be the best season, where the series establishes its name and reels in ratings and viewers. You can't wait until the second season before the show gets good. Yeah, I think SyFy was justified in its decision. They shouldn't feel obligated to keep a show in their programme when less people watch it than they do Swamp Loggers.

It's not that it didn't have a lot of viewers. That's being proven by the backlash from the fans. I think it's that SyFy compared the ratings to "Battlestar Galactica" which was huge. They expected it to have the ratings BSG did. It's not like "Caprica" was a terrible show, either, it had a lot of positive praise from critics.

I didn't like the show, personally. It seemed that it's target audience was BSG fans, and the fact it didn't hit it's momentum yet really just goes to show that it was planned out worse than having a birthday party while you're fumigating your house. It should have been more engrossing, in my opinion, and tried to get more viewers outside of the BSG fanbase.
