Sun Jan 10, 2010 10:23 am by V
With all the rank requests recently, I thought I'd make a central thread where they could all be requested.
Costs of ranks:
Custom Rank 7,500 Points
Colored/Bolded Rank 15,000 Points

TED
So I found a pretty cool site during Buisness last week, its called Ted.
Basically, you have this organization that pays the worlds foremost experts on... well, anything; to go up on a stage and talk for a short period about whatever they want. People then pay a few thousand dollars for seats to these things, and then the company puts up the filmed presentation on the net at: www.Ted.com
Its pretty interesting stuff really, you have everything here from theories on global warming and rocket science to asian guys playing bohemian rhapsody on ukelele and stand up robots. All of these people know what they are doing/talking about though, and its a really incredible source; just thought Id tell you guys about it and open this topic for everyone to post interesting videos they found!
I will go first, a guy playing bohemian Rhapsody on a Ukelele, its really awesome! http://www.ted.com/talks/jake_shimabukuro_plays_bohemian_rhapsody.html
Please don't double post. ~Chamb

Re: TED
Our school has referred to this twice, once in Band class about playing marimba and "feeling" the music, and another time in AP Human Geography talking about Apple's marketing scheme and why they are competing with Microsoft.

This is a particularly fun one.
Its also heavily flawed, she does brush some good points, but most of what she is talking about is... well, bullshit. Generally implementing a gaming teaching system is a bad idea, you cant really make a good teaching game in any possible way. As well as the no child left behind law. She IS right in that it raises conformity, but not in the male&female sense. The problem with that law is that its unrealistic. You cant just force everyone to work harder and magically create a 100% sucess rate, some kids are just stupider than others, the only physical way of doing is to lower the standards. Moving on, one needs to remember that classes are about 30 students or so, by generally conforming things, not only do the classes become more boring for everyone *leading to a reduced intelligence average*. But it also puts the intelligent children, those smart kids that would become the next Einsteins, it puts them at the same level as the average joes, which is reduced of course. So really, all you end up doing is decreasing interest in learning, decreasing the average intelligence, and handicapping the smart kids. All this for an appearance of a perfect system.

BRRRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNN IN YOUR GUUUUUUT!!!!
I've known about TED for quite a long time. I think I was 10 years old when I started watching talks on TED.com with my Dad. I think the first one might have been about invisible octopi. I love this site, and, ummm, ya.
