College Advice anyone?

Post by Chiyuki on Sat Aug 13, 2011 12:17 am

Hey guys :D
So I'm moving out of state to start college in two days! I'm a little scared and excited too lol. I just wanted to ask if anyone has advice for starting out at college, especially as far as adjusting to new surroundings, dorm organization, and combating homesickness x.x Also advice on balancing gaming time and school work (if that's actually possible lol) Funny stories or memories from college experiences are good too! Thanks :D

Not sure how much of this will apply, but I'm drawing from my own experiences (then again I have a tendency to not apply my own advice to myself). Also since I've been living at home while studying, I can't give advice for dorm stuff.

Be prepared to spend time before the semester starts checking out where you're supposed to go. Sometimes you can find quicker ways of getting around and avoiding big crowds when you move between classes. Also if you plan out a route and walk it a few times, it helps with early morning lectures especially if you've been up late the night before.

Read any course outlines that they might give you. They often put a recommended guideline as to how much study outside of classes/labs/tutorials etc you should put in. From there you can figure out how to divvy up time between study, socialising, gaming, sleeping, eating etc. Though their guidelines seem to be on the upper end of the scale.

Clubs (as in societies and groups of people with similar interests not the weapons) are great for meeting new people and potential friend material. Just don't join too many of them. It's a common problem for freshmen. I joined about 12-15 clubs in my first year (half of them I had to pay a membership fee to join), while I got a couple of t-shirts out of it, I only attended 4-5 events for the whole year and one club (that I paid to join) appeared to have taken my money and ran. This year, I joined only 1 other club besides the one I'm in charge of.

Also sitting beside random people and randomly striking up a conversation with them can find you. That's how I ended up with most of my uni friends.

Don't be afraid to talk to anyone if you're homesick; dorm mates, RAs, family etc. Or if you're having problems in general. If they can't help, they might be able to point you in the direction of someone who can.

Take advantage of free/very cheap stuff. You're a student now (well, soon will be). It's brilliant. At my uni, there's always something being given away whether it's energy drinks, ice creams or other random things a student may need
Spoiler:
like "protection"
. We also have weekly markets on campus and I was able to pick up three brand new, very nice looking pairs of high heels for a gold coin donation a pair.

That's all I can think of right now.

Have fun at college!
