The New 52

Post by Altera on Fri Aug 26, 2011 12:44 pm

What are your thoughts on DC's reboot? Looking forward to anything? Disappointed by anything?

Most of my knowledge of this has come through the blog, DC Women Kicking Ass, and The Mary Sue, both of whom have been highlighting the reduced percentage of women writers, artists and characters and the Wonder Woman "Pants or No Pants" debate.

I'm rather saddened to see the end of the "Secret Six", which was one of my favourite series. I'm disappointed with some of the costume changes (like the new Harley Quinn outfit, Wonder Woman's boots (the blue looks horrible)) and with Dan DiDio's responses to fans (he was rather rude to one fan who posed a couple of questions over the reboot).

I might have a look at Demon Knights, Justice League Dark and Blackhawks when they come out (if they do come out in NZ).

Whats this about, exactly? Is there an article or something we can read? I don't follow DC that much.

Everything that happened so far doesn't matter anymore.
There is no particular explanation why everything has been reset. Mostly because the last time DC tried to do that, it wound up being Superboy punching reality.

DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio on the upcoming line-wide relaunch wrote:The truth is people are leaving [superhero comics] anyway, they’re just doing it quietly, and we have been papering it over with increased prices. We didn’t want to wake up one day and find we had a bunch of $20 books that 10,000 people are buying.

Basically, they figured because of poor sales, they'll revamp, re-number and go digital. Ditching some parts of characters' backstories and ignoring some significant past events (though from what I hear, "The Killing Joke" still happened but Barbara Gordon/Oracle/Batgirl regains the use of her legs somehow) in an attempt to draw in more readers.

Babs was paralysed from the waist down after the events of "The Killing Joke" where the Joker shot her in order to drive her father Commissioner Gordon insane, in the late 80s. After that, Babs decided to become an information broker to the various heroes and became Oracle, helped found the "Birds of Prey" and generally kicked ass from her wheelchair. In the comics, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown have been Batgirl in more recent times.
