Can somebody point me in the right direction, please? Went out yesterday and today and the ammeter from time to time shows 15amp charge but then flicks back to 0. Then it goes back up to 15amps - sometimes a little over. Do I have a problem with the diodes ? - the same Lucas GEU2206M (Lucas Part No A115/45A/14V, replacing LRA100) 45amp alternator and its protective shield from the exhaust has been in service for many years without an incident. I have also had some squealing, initially I thought from the water pump, which I have changed together with the fan belt, but the noise came back this afternoon. Another problem is that the overdrive relay (Bosch 30amp) has become irregular in action. Any helpful comments? I should add that it is around 37/38C here at the moment and TRing is not a lot of fun! james

Hi All, planned run across west Herefordshire had to be aborted earlier when I noticed the ignition warning light shining brighter than the sunshine! Symptom- ignition light shines brightly at 2500 rpm but goes out at tickover speed. Light goes out at 2500 rpm if headlamps are switched on. Alternator is probably a Bastuck Classic. If faulty, could it be repaired? Best wishes. Willie

Having followed a thread on the 4a Forum re alternator options, I thought I would move my latest chapter to a more general area. I have a Lucas LR101 alternator fitted to a 4a with the thin belt conversion. New wiring loom with no Control Box. When engine first run last year, the ignition warning light extinguished when the engine started and the voltmeter indicated a charge when revs increased (also checked with multimeter). Then recently the ignition warning light stayed on; I did a number of checks (fan belt tight, no charge indicated when revs increased, connections checked for tightness). I replaced the alternator with same model, initially ran fine, light went out, all looked good. Started engine this morning to continue tuning set-up and warning light stayed on again! Any suggestions ? I find it hard to believe that 15 mins running would be enough to cook the diodes/voltage regulator on a new alternator (exhaust manifold heat shield fitted), but I can't think what else to blame Many thanks David

As always, one job leads to another. I had always assumed that sometime in the future I may want to consider: Alternator, Narrow Belt, Electric Fan conversion, preferably one at a time. But ideally not just yet as I have loads of other things to do which are more important. However, my dynamo is showing signs of bearing wear so I had to deal with it and had the choice of reconditioned/new dynamo now or go for an alternator. Thinking that of each of the three things above the alternator conversion is probably the most sensible, I'll do that now. So the plan was to install the alternator with the existing thick belt. I have seen a YouTube video of a guy doing just that. So I bought the alternator, mounting kit and wiring. When the alternator arrived it already had a thin fan pulley on it. Problem 1: I cannot get the new pulley nut off the alternator to put my old one on - it appears massively tight and there is no easy way to stop it rotating without damaging the alternator. Potential problem 2: even if I could get it off without damaging the alternator I don't know if my existing pulley will actually fit on. So (unless someone can help me with the above problem), plan B is to go for the narrow belt conversion now, which is perhaps the right thing to do anyway. Can anyone advise on the following: A. As my new alternator already has a narrow pulley on it do I just need to buy narrow crank pulley and narrow water pump pulley (as listed by e.g. Rimmer, Moss) rather than the full kit, and does that mean it will be 'undamped' - and will my existing fan fit back on - for now at least? B. How difficult to fit? It looks like I could probably access the crank pulley without removing the radiator - is that so? Do I need to take the main crank bolt out, and if so how do I lock the engine to do this. I known this is a very well trodden path and have read plenty of stuff on this and other forums, but can't actually find any step by step instructions for this. Thanks for any help. Alistair.

Hi I need some help identifying the alternator fitted to my TR6 by a PO as I try and track down some electrical gremlins - please see attached photos. It has a sticker labelled "DMA 4458" on it, plus the numbers 612 000 08 on the front face. It is approx. 12cm long (exc. pulley & fan) and approx. 11.5cm diameter. A search on DMA 4458 doesn't yield anything useful and I can find pictures of both 35A and 45A alternators with the 612 000 08 number on the front face... Thanks in advance! Steve
