Not keen on that interior at all, do you know what the extra switches below the dash are for?

It is pretty amazing how smart the overall car is, and then there is that interior quilting!  It is almost a good thing for a buyer to see a car with something so visibly off-putting (in my opinion) and yet so fixable.   That car is beautiful, and makes me wonder where it ranks in Michelotti's body of work.

Cheers

Fair point about the interior, but still a thing of beauty.

Am I alone in seeing something Ferrari about the Italia?

Don't think so, maybe the Maserati 350GT styled by Michelotti.

Correct, Italia is basically a 2/3rds scale Maserati 3500, when they were new they were displayed together side by side at the New York motor show .

Right, I see. That's the connexion, then. A similar grille, perhaps?

I've always seen a lot of Ferrari 250 Ellena in these cars.

The Italia grille is a Maserati one cut down.

I stand corrected. Thanks, Stuart! Ferrari or Maserati are both grand in terms of design influences. I can live with that.

The Italia grille is not a cut down Maserati  grille. its just a pattern alloy pressing. As for the pic of the Ferrari above, you can clearly see influences for the surrey top rear window there.

I think you`ll find it uses the same grille section and the brass outer shell is definitely cut down from a larger one .

A few notes from marque expert Adrian Sinnott, who believes:

  • Grille inserts on show cars were modified Maserati 3500 pieces.
  •         True at least for Italia #3, where marks correspond to removed vertical bars.
  • Once production began, a separate stamping was created for the Italia insert.
  • Graham Proffitt (UK) has made reproductions of both Maserati and Italia grille inserts.

#27 has the same as it was an early car.
