Hello

This is a quote from a Roger post on 5th July 2021,    I found it while looking for tips on fitting door cards, escutcheons etc.

"PS - there may be another way that would be easier.

Insert all the clips in any one row  eg the 4 along the bottom.

Using a 1" wide strip of Ali or stainless that covers the length of the 4 clips insert it into the clips - make sure the clips are tight on the metal.

Repeat this for the other 3 sides.

Coat the metal strips in contact adhesive. Coat the door card with contact adhesive - when ready press the card onto the door."

Anyway,   I thought it sounds good, so I'm giving it a try.   Today's effort in pictures, to be followed by glueing tomorrow.

Cheers

Dave

Right then.   What I have learned:-

gorilla contact adhesive is useless, unless it goes somewhere you don't want, then it is excellent.

Evostick works well.

The corners of the card leave a bit to be desired because they are not fixed to anything. Maybe some other ali strip fitted to the main ones (not sure how).

If you have piping on the trim,   this needs to be very securely fitted to the main card covering, because the piping is the main bit sticking to the aluminium strips. Probably best to stick the piping all down with evostick before doing the main fitting.   The little staples fixing the piping on my card are popped out all over the place.

In the WSM it shows two screws fixing the ends of the door card pocket onto the door frame.   Not sure if this is just a 4 thing or should be on a 4A, anyway they were missing on mine, but I'm putting them on because the end of the pocket was not particularly well fixed to the card (the little staples again).

I've fitted the passenger card, all seems well. The proof will be when I need to take it off again, hopefully all the clips and ali strips and card  will all come off in one piece.

Cheers

Dave, would some velcro strips assist here? I have found that the adhesive on the genuine stuff that comes on a roll with a strip of hooks and another of loops is pretty strong if you leave them to cure on the selected surfaces before pressing the strips together. Just a thought.

Thank you Miles. Sounds like a good plan.  I'll give it a go.

Hello

Quick update. Using Miles' velcro idea,   I thought i would just velcro the whole card on.  I left the one door with ali strips, and worked on the other one.   Same idea, but velcro all around the edge of the door and the edge of the card. Worked a treat,  card secure, and no gaps that I can see.  Probably better than the ali strips because the card fits better into the pressed steel, whereas the ali was holding it out a bit. Didn't use any clips.

Same process - make sure the piping is properly fixed onto the card. I used evostick to do that where it was loose.

The hook and loop tape i got from B&Q, 30mm X 5m. Sticks well,  costs £10.  Does one door.

I have taken it off and put it back on,  and works well.

Cheers

Hi Dave, I’ve just stumbled on this. My car is getting damaged because of the clips pulling through.
I was wondering if you stayed with the Velcro mounting of the door cards or moved onto something else?
