trg65 Posted April 14 Report Posted April 14 Any suggestions for adhesives? New door pulls are the budget range. These are very shiny material, and I can't find anything to stick to them. It's very odd; I've tried Bostic Contact, no nails, and gripfill. When the adhesives dry, they peel off, searching through the forum. Recommended from Martrim- contact adhesive. Has anyone used this? Thanks George Quote
Tim T Posted April 14 Report Posted April 14 Woolies AF178 heat resistant contact adhesive is what I used although on used original units. Tim Quote
yardman Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 i haven't fitted new ones but drivers side i have refitted i used plaster board tape the stuff you put over gaps glued that on back then used car body / windsceeen adhesive, i think the idea is very poor design i have now made pull handle's from black vinyl screwed into door frame just under capping Quote
Peter V W Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 Hi George, consider fitting TR4 door pulls, they give a permanent solution. Peter Quote
stuart Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 (edited) You will struggle to stick those rubber tops, they are a very poor substitute. The problem is the release agent that is used to stop them sticking to the moulds. You need to clean the back side that your going to stick with a Scotchbrite pad soaked in a good quality spirit wipe, one that is used to remove silicones etc from panels before painting. Give it a really good scrub off only on the rear and also clean and Scotch the area of the door top that you want them to stick to. I use the Alpha AF178 glue from Woolies trim. Stuart. Kevo_6 Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 I did everything as suggested by Stuart and others above (but to be fair my door pulls were about 6 or 7 years old but still in a sealed bag and there was no way that they would stick). As Stuart mentions the release agent seeps out probably just soaking into the pulls. No matter how I scrubbed and sanded the pulls down, still wouldn’t stick. I gave up and had some door pulls made up and had them sprayed satin black and screwed them on and also did what Peter had done and fitted TR4 door pulls. Good luck and I hope they stick for you. trg65 Posted April 15 Author Report Posted April 15 Good shout for chrome pull but door metal in bad state holes etc Looking at the vinyl it’s made in two a hard inner and the deceptive outer which is the shiny nonstick problem I tried grip fill and stuck to it so possibility? I’ll try and clean with white spirits , I’ll phone the big supplier unlikely they won’t know what i am talking about ! Thank you all Quote
Tim T Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 White spirit will leave an oily residue, so will need cleaning off again. Tim Quote

Thank you all You will find in the middle of the door frame towards the top there are two holes that the door pull would fit into You just need to find some inserts or else use rivnuts to fix the handle to. I never fit nor recommend the rubber cappings as they arent fit for purpose Im afraid. The suppliers wont have a clue what your talking about. Stuart. Quote

Classical Dash in High Wycombe (http://classical-dash.co.uk/ ) will make you a pair of door cappings in Piano black as a special order - or at least they did some for me a few years back - came out very nicely Cheers Rich Quote
Kevo_6 Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 (edited) They did come out very nicely thanks Rich, you supplied mine. I used these to fix the handles and they worked very well. Edited April 15 by Kevo_6 Quote

PodOne Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 +1 for the TR4 handles and rivnuts. I just made sure the door frame tops were painted nicely rather than refitting the plastic pulls as I wasn’t convinced they would stay attached long term. Andy Quote

trg65 Posted April 15 Author Report Posted April 15 It's a good shout for chrome pulls, but the metal at the top is in poor condition screws holes, poor paint etc. The tiger seal may work, but looking closely, it is made of hard inner plastic and the outer vinyl, which is the slippery vinyl, tried sanding the surface still the same phoned the guy said they sell a lot of this type, and are aware of this issue so Sent an email to supplier, asking do they have an adhesive, Their response was no explanntion, go to a re-trimmers, it would be usefull to know what type of vinyl it is so we can buy the correct adhesive. george Quote
Peter V W Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 George, See attached photo of door pull fixings. Your door shell should have the holes. Peter Quote
Andy Moltu Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 They are pants, Even after scrubbing the back with scotchbrite and a variety of solvents I have concluded they are made of the same material that the current American President is made of but in black rather than orange. I think TR Shop have ones more akin to the originals but at a price. Quote
trg65 Posted April 15 Author Report Posted April 15 Hi Peter, I have the door cards on now but still need to attach the pulls to the doors. Andy, completely agree with you ! Quote

trg65 Posted Thursday at 09:19 AM Author Report Posted Thursday at 09:19 AM Thanks for the info, but the new polyurethane pulls I bought have to be fitted due to the poor metal finish, and I had a reply from the supplier as expected, zero help! Quote

I was going to suggest using the post73 door top finishers. 824901 and 824911 but have seen they are as expensive as the poly foam things you have. Still a better arrangement though. Quote

Why dont you just use some black vinyl across the top to the same coverage as a finisher? Easy to glue down and would finish off the door. Stuart. Quote
