adriantr4 Posted May 17, 2025 Report Posted May 17, 2025 Hello I have an item up for sale on the Register site. I am in email contact with a buyer, but it somehow doesn't seem right - odd use of English and other things. He (?) wants to pay by cheque, wanted my address & phone number, didn't want bank transfer. Anyhow, I have given my address and phone, he says he will sort the carrier. I then get a message saying the cheque will include the carrier fee? Is this the overpayment scam, collecting my details? The guys name is Chris Towne. Register member? "Thanks for the details sent . I will update you once i confirm the payment issued and sent to your mailing address later today. The shipping funds will be included on the payment . I will give you further directives on how to communicate with the carrier as regards the best time for the collection when cheque has cleared. I hope i can trust and confide in you. Reserve it for me alone , tell other buyers it is sold . ok I will keep you posted soon about the payment sent ." Adrian
Hamish Posted May 17, 2025 Report Posted May 17, 2025 Scam as you suspected would be my strongest feeling on this one
stuart Posted May 17, 2025 Report Posted May 17, 2025 Yep definitely a scam, the bit about shipping funds included is always the give away plus virtually no one uses cheques these days. Stuart.
adriantr4 Posted May 17, 2025 Author Report Posted May 17, 2025 Thanks to all, appreciated. I was thinking of asking the moderators to pin this with a title modification so others don't fall into the trap? Here's more of it: "Hi Adrian, Thanks for the trust and understanding ! I am restoring me TR4 hence the reason i am purchasing the offside wing. Here is my details: Chris Towne 4 Impasse de kermelo 56100 Lorient France +33759251877 The payment had been mailed out to your address today .. I expect it to deliver in a few days .. Be on the look out for it and let me know when the payment gets delivered in your mail box .. Kindly get the cheque deposited at your bank when received ok Keep me posted .."
Dale Moore Posted May 17, 2025 Report Posted May 17, 2025 Does call out scam but then maybe not🤔 nothing wrong with a cheque. The address is valid and shows up on Google maps and even street view. Why not give the guy a call on the phone number
adriantr4 Posted May 17, 2025 Author Report Posted May 17, 2025 Dale, you are decent guy. However, the last piece of the puzzle: "I normally should not be asking for this unusual favor but the reason for it is because the carrier does not accept cheque payments. So that is why i thought it will be a great idea for their funds to be included on your payment to pay them on my behalf. I will write you another email to confirm the payment mailed out soon to your address ." Let's close this and I will edit it via the moderators and get it pinned if we all agree?
