monty Posted July 4, 2025 Report Posted July 4, 2025 I want to try different brake pads in the 4A. For several years I have used Green Stuff but think I can do better. What are people preferring these days. I tried Mintex fast road pads in my TR4 a few years ago & they squealed terribly even with anti squeal shims & they were dumped & replaced with quality standard items. Some people have suggested Hawk but what type? Confused! Any thoughts welcome. Many thanks. Quote

qkingston Posted July 5, 2025 Report Posted July 5, 2025 No seperately. I fitted the shims which were recommended by Roger H, Marco and others; I've been trying to find the old post in which they were described but I can't find it with this new website!! Someone might be able to provide the details?? David Quote

John Morrison Posted July 5, 2025 Report Posted July 5, 2025 From memory, always a risk these days, I got anti squeal pads from, Bigg Red after a recommend potion on this forum. Used them on a troublesome euro box, but they did work very well. John. Quote

I get them from Burton Power and they work very well. https://www.burtonpower.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?p=2&q=Ferodo+ I haven't tried any of the mintex so can't compare. Ferodo FER 167 come in three grades FER167 street cars £117 FER167H Track days £132 FER167R Race days. £146 They stop. They don't fade. They can squeal but the above shims will stop that that. Roger PS the pin holes do need to be opened to be round Edited July 5, 2025 by RogerH Quote

Never managed to make them fade in road use and silent compared to Green Stuff (yuk) or Mintex 1144. I also have the shims/clips fitted. Tim Tim Quote
RJSTR4A Posted July 7, 2025 Report Posted July 7, 2025 I went with ceramic pads many years ago because they are nearly dustless (saves me having to clean my wire wheels but once a season). Perfectly happy and totally quiet. Mind you, I do not ask a lot of my brakes other than to stop me at stop lights/signs. I never push them hard Bob Quote
Besalu Posted September 6 Report Posted September 6 Yesterday i had a front brake disc seize while driving. Luckily i was very close to home and no damage done. So i have been looking at various threads about calipers and discs and i am thinking of having the calipers rebuilt. however it seems the calipers i have in there now are not original (not surprised tbh). Can anyone help identify these for me? Stamped number 7213 and on the reverse the numbers SD2213 151218 After reading Stuart's advice about keeping original calipers i was thinking of getting a quote from a company such as BiggRed. Has anyone used them or can anyone give me some alternative suggestions of companies that do this work? It seems the Hawk discs the best option? Thanks in advance for any help or guidance, Richard Quote
stuart Posted September 6 Report Posted September 6 Cheaper to buy a pair of new calipers from TR Shop, about £120 the pair Stuart Quote
BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted September 6 Report Posted September 6 Repro 16P calipers are even cheaper from MGOC. Also fits Ford and MGC https://www.mgocspares.co.uk/product/34284/m16-brake-caliper-lh-cast-steel Quote
Nigel C Posted September 6 Report Posted September 6 am I right in thinking you can use Ford Escort and just "tickle" the pin holes? Quote
BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted September 6 Report Posted September 6 Yes if the pads are for the later calipers using 3/16” pins. Quote
harrytr5 Posted September 6 Report Posted September 6 I much prefer original calipers fully rebuilt by past parts. Big Red do not do them any more. The repro calipers I found the difficult to bleed but found a way in the end. Give me original every day. Regards Harry Quote
