My car came with a Moto-Lita steering wheel but I'm not a fan and would like to source an original Triumph item but I'm not sure exactly what version that is, I've seen black and silver versions, and versions with holes and slots.

Would someone be able to advise what version is correct for a 1970 CP51xxx car?

Thanks

I have the same wheel as Niall above, with the “round” donut, both are correct for CP cars.

The later (CR) cars had a different donut.

1976 Original Spitfire 1500 this is 14.5” and feels slightly thicker on the Outer Rim you’ll also notice the difference on the Horn Centre.

Thanks Stuart

So this would be correct?

The listing is a bit contradictory regarding chassis no.s

Thanks

Sean

Yes but poor condition. There is bound to be better ones out there.

The one on ebay is actually a Spitfire, possibly a GT6 item which is the same 15" rim barring the fact that the rim is made of a very hard material, try to find an original with the composite, leather look-alike material.

That’s really rough shape / fugly and were I you I would keep looking as that’ll cost a fair bit to recover properly

Unless you're into originality at all costs, buy the later 14.5" CR one as it's much nicer to drive with as it's thicker and softer padded than the 15" CP which is too thin and hard. Here's my 72 CP with the CR wheel fitted.

Interesting thread.

Can anyone advise on where I could get the outer hand grip on one of these steering wheels repaired/restored/recovered? Mine is tatty and loose. I've covered it with a leather band but I'd prefer it to look more original.

I had mine done by Royal Steering Wheels. https://royalsteeringwheels.com/

DRD thanks for the recommendation.

Did Royal Steering Wheels repair/replace the rubber (or whatever material it is) grip around the perimeter of the steering wheel or just cover with leather?

Not sure but I think they just recovered the wheel with Nappa leather. It looked like a new wheel after I repainted the spokes.

Hi

I have this one, which came with my 1972 CP model. I actually swapped it for a Mota Lita, preferring a thicker rim. It appears to be 14.5” diameter, so not sure if this is the right wheel for my car, or even for a 1970 model. Can any one identify it for me? Has a previous owner painted the spokes?

Many thanks.

That's the later wheel, CR version, it's probably been repainted. I know earlier 15" wheels came in black on US cars not sure if that applies to the CR version of a US car.

I also fitted the later CR version in my 1970, but I put the early padding and horn push on it.

Thank you for clarifying that for me Gareth.

Sean-not sure if you are sorted now but feel free to PM me if a CR wheel is of any interest.

Regards

Jon
