By coincidence I was looking at a video a couple of days ago about such things.

I was amazed how simple the scanning process has become. I'd looked at the process a few years back and it seemed to require putting the object on a turntable and having a scanner on a tripod sending out a beam of light and measuring how long it took to come back.

Now all you need to do is put on a glove and wave it about.

Of course, the kit doesn't come cheap. I'd be curious to know the price of a printer big enough to make a full sized dashboard. (The one this guy made is a bit too small, I think.)

The SDF have used scanning to reverse engineer the 4 cylinder crankshaft (available from MOSS, or the successor company) and the UKC979 spacer (now available from BMH), and whilst I was there they were working on a full scale scan of a famous steam railway locomotive on behalf of a famous "toy" company.
Two successful projects resulting in the availability of brand new correct cross drilled 4 cylinder cranks and the spacer that was essential for diff rebuilds on 5 speed TR7s and Rover V8s

I went to a 3D printing seminar some years ago, when I was trying to get into the industry.

They showed examples of the systems used by many of the 'Big' car companies to produce body kit prototypes etc, in place of the old 'clay block' sculpting method.

Also used by most of the F1 teams apparently for airflow and spoiler design components.

Very expensive kit, but in their world, perhaps not so......!!
