Hi,

Over the last year I have renewed all my fuel pipe work, (early TR6) overhauled the Lucas pump and fitted a Prestige PR valve. ( diaphragm type)

The car was running badly last august and on finding rust in the pipe work I decided to renew the lot.

All back together and NO fuel coming out of the MU.

Reluctantly I removed the MU to investigate..... The MU was seized solid...the plastic drive dog good as new...can only be one thing, yes the dizzy drive gear to the MU lugs had sheared off.

This part 149100 is no longer available. Revington list used  ones (not cheap)

Prestige list a pedestal for all models. Mine is an early car and I'm not sure they are all the same.

Does anyone have for sale an early 6 or TR5 dizzy pedestal or possibly just the drive gear which interfaces with the plastic MU dog?

If there's a trader which rebuilds these pedestals with new seals you know of please let me know. (No body open on bank holiday weekend)

So basically distributor pedestal and/or MU pedestal drive gear wanted.

Now to finish dismantling the MU, I freed it off with freeway sprayed in and eventually I could start to turn it using the side of a spanner, now I can inspect the shuttle for condition.

My MU becoming seized in a year of being idle is an indication of the modern E5 super dupper £7.75 per gallon petrol.

This all started with rusty pipes.... Beware!

Thanks Stuart, I didn't see that one when I searched before.

I assume seals will be available.... even if I just rob the drive gear It would be wise to renew  seals in my unit.

I'll wait till I've called KMI to see if they'll sell the  MU seals before I strip the MU any further. The days are gone when I could pop up to see Ken Mills and he'd give what I needed when I rebuilt my MU.

I'm so annoyed this went to classified. Maybe by default? I thought it would be good info to share. I should have put it in technical section.

Thanks again Ken

Thanks for sharing Ken.

This is a warning for all of us running a PI. Don’t let your engine sit idle for long periods of time.
If the long period of non-running is expected then replacing the E5 with say 10 litres (2 gallons) of Aspen fuel would be a good method.

On your car: I would check/clean the whole system and recondition the injectors and PRV too.
A combination of brake cleaner and compressed air work well for the metal pipes, but not for the rubber pipes, as it could attack the rubber.

If you are going to the all Triumph Day in Shuttleworth this Sunday 7th September, Fred Millturn. (Martin Giles) will have a stand in there. He is the guru on PI stuff and is in cahoots with KMI and I mean that in a nice way. He will have spares to sell.

Regards Harry (a  happy customer)

Thanks Harry,

Didn't know Fred Millturn would be at the Triumph day. Not that I'll be able to go. I nearly bought the parts for the MU from Martin. Didn't think he might have pedestal gears S/H though. Good shout thanks.

I bought a pedestal from eBay and robbed the gear. All the parts for the MU I bought from KMI.

Car running ok now, not had a run in it yet but once I got the ignition timing close it ran well...I might treat myself to a strobe light.

Regards Ken
