Parking sensors

I am getting a little long in the tooth and am finding it harder to twist my head rearward when parking. I have been thinking of fitting rear parking sensors. But when looking at the back of the TR it would seem the only place to fit the sensors is to the rear bumper. I am loath to cut holes in the bumper for the sensors. Has anyone successfully fitted reversing sensors to the rear of a TR6 without cutting holes in the bumper?

Hi Bill have you thought about a reversing camera? Not done it myself but there’s quite a few that are compact and l would have thought there’s plenty of places to fit on the back. Maybe the screen can sit on the ash tray???

How about something that sits under the bumper? I looked up a popular kit on amazon and it says they're 21mm diameter... I did a quick and dirty model of a pod that might slide onto the bumper from behind and then be locked in place with a couple of grub screws.

You'd still have to deal with routing wires - and account for any angle of the bumper making them point up...

That adapter may work.

The sensor can see sideways better than an Owl with a twisty neck so anything sticking out will set it off.

You wight even get away with having something similar to what I drew up - but instead of fastener it might be easier to use some VHB tape to sticker them to the underside of the bumper. They’re not very heavy. And that tape is what they usually use to stick stuff to the outside of cars anyway.

Here's another with an angle to accommodate the underside of the bumper (can be changed to whatever angle is required) that would stick on with VHB.

Happy to help out if you want to look into fitting them like this. I can print them out for you - and make them prettier (chamfers or radiuses corners) and size them to whatever size sensors you get.

I like the idea of a camara but where do you put the screen, I have tried to put it on the reversing mirror, however they are all to big you need something no  more than 8 inches long otherwise it interferes with the sun visors

Put it where the ash tray is? That's how I mounted my CarPlay screen.

Use the clamp arrangement but attached to the number plate perhaps. Fit only 2 sensors.     Feed wires into boot behind number plate

 

I investigated this for Sidescreen cars and concluded brackets might work.   Issue was getting the sensor far enough from the mounting bracket of the overider.     Alternative was drill over riders!,   Someone told me that the sensors do not work properly if mounted in steel.   Is that waffle?

Then I tried drilling the rear lamp lens to install the sensor.  That worked but looks fuggly.   Wires run into lamp so are invisible.

sensors that attach to a number plate already exist. So no need to reinvent the wheel?

How can I put a picture of my 5 when unit is not needed for sat nav Jason  ?

I don’t think you can add a camera to the units we have @harrytr5 - they’re designed for motorcycles, which don’t really have a need for a reversing camera. I have seen other bike specific carpuride units that have front and rear cameras, but I believe they’re more akin to dashcams rather than anything else.

You can get car specific CarPlay units from carpuride and other manufacturers that do offer reversing cams - but then you lose your quick disconnect mounting system.

After a few teething problems the Satnav works extremely well and the touch screen is ace.

So much in there I have as yet to explore.

Finally got round to installing the parking sensor kit. I did not want to drill holes in the bodywork or bumper so I made some clips/brackets that clipped on to the underside of the bumper. Wiring was easy as I have a CP body converted to CR and have the redundant hole for the CP number plate light wiring just behind the rear bumper. I connected the control unit to the reversing light lamp connection. The sensor kit has a small display which sits nicely on the ashtray. Kit works quite well even has a left right indication. Bleep could be louder.

At the moment temporarily with a number plate double sided adhesive pad but looking for a more sophisticated method, maybe double sided sellotape.

I have fitted a reversing camera on another car of mine..."Screen" fits onto the rear view mirror. Camera attached near rego plate..

Downside on a TR is that the single "wire" to the mirror would be exposed.....Maybe there are "wireless" versions...A clever person may be able to run the wire inside the windscreen frame.

Hi Mr maleable 

I have run wires up the windscreen, well, tucked in the rubber, the wires are to feed a mg mirror, with down lights   I tried to fit a reversing mirror   however I could not find a mirror suitable, they fowled against the sun vissor
