GreatOldOne Posted October 2, 2025 Report Posted October 2, 2025 As some of you know, I’m a bit of a 3D printing nerd. I’m already selling these: But I have made other things for my TR that people might be interested in. Firstly, there’s a mag safe mount for your iPhone: And an access door in the boot card so you can get to any boot mounted relay / fuses for pumps etc. I also have another set of mounts for a specific CarPlay unit but I’m toying with the idea of creating one that has a generic 1” / 25mm ball that anything can be attached to (sat nav, quad lock etc) Also, a simple escutcheon for a period radio: If there’s enough interest I might look into putting them up for offer. I also have some other items I’m working on - fuel line ID clips for PI cars, a tunnel mounted heated seat switch plinth… I can post pics of what I have so far on those if someone asks. Let me know. Jason. Quote
harlequin Posted October 2, 2025 Report Posted October 2, 2025 This is all good to see Jason, this sort of thing is really useful! Are you going to put an online catalogue together? I am sure it would create a.lot of interest. One thing I have been looking for, for a very long time is the light fitting that is mounted above the heater controls on an American TR6 which has been unavailable for a very long time Quote
GreatOldOne Posted October 2, 2025 Author Report Posted October 2, 2025 That certainly looks like something I could attempt - I would of course need an original to take the measurements from so I could work up a 3d model of it. I could probably create some sort of catalog if there’s enough interest. 🤓 Quote
Chris Hale Posted October 2, 2025 Report Posted October 2, 2025 Hi Jason I would possibly interested in the CarPlay unit Quote

These are like hens teath, there is a chap in America who 3D prints them but he won't supply to Europe George Quote
Steve-B Posted October 2, 2025 Report Posted October 2, 2025 I can attest to the high quality of the round charging unit, it works a treat and securely fit right into where the ashtray used to be! Jason does great thinking!!! Quote

Aldpilot Posted October 4, 2025 Report Posted October 4, 2025 Jason, Great work, but those prices are too low!! We need you to keep your enthusiasm and I for one would pay double the price you have quoted (especially if including shipping). Give it some thought before it takes off. Hopefully others agree. I've always sold things too low and given up when I realized I was not making much of a profit. It's amazing how long you actually spend making something, cleaning it up, packing it properly, taking it to the post office etc. If you have something that no one else is making then you should make the most of it before someone else copies it. Start high. If there are no sales then at least you can go down. Quote
GreatOldOne Posted October 4, 2025 Author Report Posted October 4, 2025 I have a hard time pricing these things up. I know how much the material costs are, and what the postage is... but never know how much to charge for my time... If you were me, Gents - how much would you charge for each of the items here (and the fusebox)? If I where to increase prices, I would of course honor the old pricing for anyone who had ordered prior. Quote
TR NIALL Posted October 4, 2025 Report Posted October 4, 2025 My thoughts on this are….if you cover costs and make a few bob Happy Days nobody will bother copying what you do as there’s not enough money in it for them. Increase your prices so maybe less sales but others then think I’ll copy those as there’s a few bob to be made here so you then get even less sales. Quote
harlequin Posted October 4, 2025 Report Posted October 4, 2025 (edited) It is very difficult to pitch your pricing at a level that suits you and where you want to be with your hobby/business. My wife has a hobby making things from stained glass and although it is not intended to be an income source she does sell at local craft fairs and has a stand in a shop. She has found it very difficult getting pricing right, she started too low and has now raised them a little bit at a time to strike a good balance. George Edited October 4, 2025 by harlequin Quote
Lebro Posted October 4, 2025 Report Posted October 4, 2025 As many of you know, I make LED replacement bulbs for the rear of sidescreen TR's I charge only what I have to spend on parts + postage. As prices for parts vary from month to month, & I do keep a small stock I take a rolling average of cost when stating the price. I enjoy making them, so have no wish to charge for my time. Bob Quote
GreatOldOne Posted October 7, 2025 Author Report Posted October 7, 2025 Pics of the 'Generic' Ball Mount - the price (£20) is for what you see - the standard 1" ball, the mounting hardware and the 3D printed plastic ashtray mounting. I've also made it so there's a USB plug sized knock out that can be removed if you want to feed and power leads down inside the dash. Quote
Charlie D Posted October 7, 2025 Report Posted October 7, 2025 I really like the "Black crackle" effect that you have on some of your items. I didn't realize that you could do that with a 3D printer. I would have thought it was too fine a detail. Quote
GreatOldOne Posted October 7, 2025 Author Report Posted October 7, 2025 It’s an artefact of the surface the print is laid down on. It’s textured to ensure adhesion to whilst the item is printing. You can smooth printing beds too - and others that put other patterns in (like a woven carbon fibre effect, or a prismatic shimmer) Quote

If I where to increase prices, I would of course honor the old pricing for anyone who had ordered prior. I have no concept of the time involved in 3D printing anything, but would have thought somewhere between £0.75 and a £1 a minute labour time was not unreasonable, assuming you are retired and doing it for fun. Of course, you need to amortise your design and development time and costs, so will need to decide on how many of each item you are going allow for this. When doing the development an accurate record of time spent is important and 'by the minute' is easy given a simple chart Costs are also easy The toughie is how many items produced before these initial costs are covered Quote
