harrytr5 Posted February 25 Report Posted February 25 +1 with Marco. Excellent piece of Kit He even modified one for a friend to fit. Regards Harry Quote
Kenrow Posted February 27 Report Posted February 27 As mentioned the correct cap is the US spec one (shown below), you next best thing would be the from a TR4/5 as Rich is selling. Since you don’t want the 250 cap, what you choose will not be correct so it is all based on which you feel is more visibly pleasing. Quote
trchris Posted February 27 Author Report Posted February 27 (edited) Hi Ken Thats the one l had originally however it hasn’t faired well and was both damaged and bent I’ve seen another type of aluminium magnetic cap, with a closing catch side mechanism which l believe was fitted to the American early 6s ? ( or was a option ) It’s in good condition so at the moment I’m weighing up the options My 250 is far from original Chris Edited February 27 by trchris Quote
BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted February 27 Report Posted February 27 (edited) Tha magnetic closing cap was deemed to be in potential danger of flipping open if the rear or side rear of the car was struck in an accident. There is a service bulletin to advise on this. SOLD. I have a very good old stock unfitted NAS TR6 cap with the mechanical latch, if anyone is interested. Pt no 723040. Has a few scratches that should polish out. Edited February 27 by BlueTR3A-5EKT Quote
Z320 Posted February 28 Report Posted February 28 I made a few lock inserts for the magnetic TR250 fuel cap too, but this costes me too much time. Perhaps an idea for a project for someone else? Ciao, Marco Quote

There is a service bulletin to advise on this. This bulletin seems to first address the tendency of the magnet to un-stick itself from the cap ( part 1 of 2 ). I've had this happen on one of mine after 50+ years of service ( out of warranty I suppose ) and indeed it is challenging to match the adhesive TRIUMPH used. I think I used weatherstrip adhesive last time... I love the original caps and still wonder what they were coated with originally; I sanded out all the scratches and buffed them to get an attractive albeit flat sheen but found it necessary to fit stainless hinge pins as originals do rust and stain them. Tom, I’d guess the original alloy pressure die cast caps were matte anodised, at least that is what the new ones I used to sell looked like all those years ago. It is the same finish I get done on the aeroscreen mounting brackets I produce for sidescreen cars. It looks like milky chrome. You need some form of surface finish to protect the base metal from atmospheric corrosion, I would guess. The aeroscreen mounts I sell in both anodised and just plain bright polished finish. The anodised can be simply washed with soapy water to bring the back to their original finish. The polished ones require the effort of an application of a suitable aluminium polish to bring them back to their starting look. Quote
