Hi all.   In the process of stripping, inspecting and painting all.the suspension and rear axle.    Took the half shafts out today, both those and inside of axle tubes covered in a horrible mess.   Not quite oil, not quite grease ( see pics).   Any idea what this might be and the cause.     Also seen some strange wear on end of axle tubes.    I can't see what it could be caused by.   Any ideas (see pics).    Also front suspension bronze bushings.   How do you get them out.   My 6 ton press isn't up to the job ! PXL_20260227_142012217.thumb.jpg.fbe0ef48b81baeacb688006c9e03dea2.jpgPXL_20260227_142017576.thumb.jpg.89219421c5db0c63b0312e3331b630a3.jpgPXL_20260227_142112564.thumb.jpg.63f6c0ab645beac7aa9127383cb424f6.jpgPXL_20260227_142631211.NIGHT.thumb.jpg.45ea3fa75095e5cc6cfa84c865a0a0c7.jpgPXL_20260227_143250214.NIGHT.thumb.jpg.6fd6f3e564c0bde344786517988b25d4.jpgPXL_20260227_143254823.NIGHT.thumb.jpg.f5a42956bae5f5bda797b08d0d80a0cd.jpg

Well, I can honestly say I have rebuilt many TR4 axles but never encountered anything like that.

Just an idea but in the bad old days it was not unheard of for an unscrupulous trader to chuck some fine grade sand in a whining back axle to keep it quiet for long enough to sell - just a thought?

You may well be correct Pete, but I grew up in the county of Cornwall & I'm pretty sure the chosen product was sand down there in the 1960/70's...🤔 Probably to do with more beaches than forests 😁

Nylon stockings I thought.  (didn't work for me though)

Removing front suspension outer wishbones bushes.

I have a 5/8” spigottted drift with a slightly less than 3/4” diameter shank.

The spigot locates in the bush, the shank of the drift is smaller than the hole in the wishbone arm.

If it is being difficult…..a cut with an hack saw in the bush internal wall, in two places, but not fully through should seethe bush collapse and be easier to extract.

Get the lubrication hole of the bush in the right place to align with the grease nipple hole in the wishbone arm when you fit a new bush.

No, that was to cure big end rattle. (That also didn't work, for me.)

I thought it was banana skins or maybe even the whole banana!

That's for gearboxes, sawdust for diffs. Apparently...

Nylon stocking did work on a diff but you had to catch it just right so it wrapped round the pinion. then stuff some bananas in as well and top up with 140, quiet as a mouse for about 50 miles.

For the OP I would say thats probably sawdust.

Stuart.
