I’ve just put the period correct Rostyle trims on my newly restored TR5. Had first trip out on Sunday with them on. I’m pleased with the overall appearance and had some complimentary remarks from fellow group members which was pleasing.
They weren’t in super bad condition when I acquired them, (yes Tom Fremont, they were yours) but nonetheless I put a lot of time and effort into refurbishing them.  Together with the “security system” that I’ve incorporated to prevent them falling off (not just tie wraps which are obvious) I’m pleased with how they look.
They’re on 5 1/2” rims ex early USA TR6 with Vredestein Sprint Classic 185 70 15 tyres. See separate post about tyres in TR6 section - Tyre Advice.

Superb Dave, it just makes your 5 look like a proper 5 again.

Alan,

I drilled and tapped the wheels at 3 positions and fitted very small M3 “lifting eyes” in line with 3 of the voids in the Rostyle trims. See photos. The “lifting eyes ” also have a nylon nut on the back of the wheel for extra peace of mind. I then drilled the rim of the trims’back galvanised disc that clips onto the wheel pegs at same positionss as eyes. Then use tie wrap through the rim hole and the “lifting eye” to secure them.
They’re fiddly to fit, need to use long tie wraps, all fitted and poked through void in trim before clipping trim on to pegs. Then pull tie wraps tight and clip ends off and they’re virtually invisible behind trim, unless you get down on your hands and knees with a torch to peer through voids in trim.
Just remember to carry a pair of small side cutters in your boot to remove tie wraps if you need to change wheel when you’re away from home.

Also make sure you have the proper tool to remove the trims without bending the outer rim of the trim.

On reflection, I wished I’d used M4 eyes, the M3 ones were a bit fiddly to fit pbut seem to be working ok.

BTW,

What might look like multiple scratches on the wheel rim in my photo above is actually cling film that the powder coating company fitted to provide a bit of protection from chipping when being transported.

The stock wheels here in the US were flat black with a brown primer backside. Where the UK ones different?

Ken row, the wheels I’ve used on my TR5 came from my 68 ex Californian TR6 which became my race car.
Can’t remember what back colour was. They are now powder coated silver.

Gorgeous 5 Dave made even more rare with the Rostyle caps -  and I can imagine what you went through to bring them back 😏.

Your security system makes sense on the TR6 wheel with its leggy nipples; I can imagine these might not hold them like the short ones on the 4A/250/5 wheel. Loss of the caps at speed on the latter IMO invariably result from snapping the inner cap over 2 out of 3 nipples, easily done and tricky to spot ( I used to peer into the slots to verify the fully on condition ). For all I know the long nipples could release them if sufficiently provoked even if all 3 are fully engaged.

The other thing I did was run a bead of clear silicone in the outermost channel of the covers where they meet the rim - no more rattles!

Ultimately I gave up on them because out of ~ 12 wheels I couldn't find 4 ( any, really ) whose runout was 0.040" or less ( TRIUMPH's laughably lax tolerance ). I got a set of wires from Rimmers for show purposes, went to considerable trouble and expense to get them painted ( powder coating didn't yield the shade I wanted, had to strip it off and get them etched and painted with a bright colour ). But these have some runout too and may also be impossible to balance - so back to Panasports which have served me for ~ 35 years. I can go back to the wires if I ever enter another concours event but won't use the hex nuts which were almost impossible to remove despite lithium grease everywhere and the chrome finish had to be sacrificed to get them off 😔.

Cheers,

Tom

FWIW Tom, weve found if you weld two of the spanners that are used for the hex nuts back to back then they grip the nuts so much better. I went through that years ago with one of my customers who had his 5 from new on wires hence the hex nuts.

They do enhance the look shame both wheels and trims are so scarce they would look nice on the 250
