Does anyone know if the original Backlight Window Seal will fit in the aftermarket fiberglass Backlights (Plexiglas Window)?

It probably would though it would need to be cut down in length as the fibre frame windows are smaller. When I did mine years ago I wasnt keen on the clunky look of the fibre frame so I got an uncut rear plexiglass window and trimmed it to the same size as a genuine glass then trimmed the fibre frame lip down to 10mm width and then fitted the window as per an original, now you cant tell visually the difference.

Thanks Stuart, I might ask you some more details on what you did if you don't mind?

I have no idea as to what brand it is. It's been in my attic for close to 40 years. Looks like the original owner used silicon to glue it to the car body but maybe that was just to seal it.

Microplas made a fibreglass back light frame in the 70’s and 80’s so it could be one of those ? Usually there is a small metallic plate glued on somewhere with their logo on. Original glass windows fitted these, but they were originally supposed with Perspex screens (which clouded up and cracked badly, so few survive).

The back light frames were very close shape to the original, the roof panels much less so as they were taller and looked fatter round the lip seals and rear edges.

Looking closely at it I think your right there Tony, It looks to be very similar to mine how I modified it and mine would also take an original glass. So in that case Ken a standard surrey glass rubber should fit, you really need to try and get the proper Moss one as its the only one that fits now. You will find its bigger when fitted to the window, this is correct, the excess needs to be down at each lower corner and equal. as you fit it you will understand why this is as its the only way to prevent a gap appearing down in each corner which is what happens to the ones that are a tight fit round the window.

Thanks everyone. What worries me most is my backlight seal doesn't have the chrome trim insert. Anyway, I'll bite the bullet and try the standard surrey glass rubber. Fingers crossed....

FYIW, my current seal is approximately 340 mm long.

While you have the window out check the depth of the lip the rubber sits on, the standard width on a Honeybourne f/glass frame when modified for a glass is 10mm all round. Fit the standard TR trim insert then, its not a spreader as some are, it only fits into the slot on the rubber about a 1/4" It would also if the frame was nicely refinished and a headling material used inside make it look like a genuine one.
