Richardtr3a Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 The front panel on my TR3A was taken off a couple of months ago. At the time I used masking tape along the top of the side wings to protect them from any marks on the paintwork caused by the trim fixing tabs. I have now fitted the front panel and the masking tape has left some sticky residue in a few places. I am planing to clean up the wings and I have white spirit. My question is will this damage the paint or clean it well and leave me with clear shiny wings. Please send me any advice on the best approach, or an alternative cleaner. Thanks Richard Quote
trg65 Posted April 10 Report Posted April 10 Had this same problem. I used T-Cut, then polished, which worked fine with no damage Quote
trchris Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 Hi Richard l often use brake and clutch cleaner to remove residue glue from masking tape or stickers Chris Quote
Motorsport Mickey Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 Children’s stickers which prevail these days often leave a sticky residue which picks up dirt, dust and other residues. Happily they acknowledge this by selling “ Sticky. stuff remover” in small squeeze bottles which I’ve used on a number or surfaces without any reaction from it ( including freshly painted surfaces about 12 months old) which can then polish up easily. BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 (edited) + 1 on Sticky Stuff Remover. I get it in Lakeland shops. Not cheap but does what it says. I use it to get the stick beam benders off my modern car plastic headlamps No issues with plastic crazing. Also available in Toolstation. Agree about using brake cleaner…it works but affects certain surfaces or materials or finishes. Edited April 11 by BlueTR3A-5EKT Quote
iain Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 Lemon juice if you want to be careful will often remove sticky marks. Quote
Don H. Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 (edited) Having spent a career around paper science, natural polymers, coatings, binders, adhesives, graphic arts & printing ,I use two common chemicals to remove typical adhesive residues. I start with mineral spirits/white spirits (a common nonpolar solvent). It's gentle on most surfaces, especially for short term contact, and will usually dissolve most residues. For those that don't dissolve with white spirits, I'll move to isopropyl alcohol/IPA (a common polar solvent). it will almost always get what white spirits didn't. I don't start with it because IPA probably has a greater chance to dissolve printing inks or other coatings on surfaces. As always, test in an inconspicuous place and use a microfiber or something that won't leave scratch marks on the surface even as the residue is removed. Edited April 11 by Don H. Quote
TR Rob Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 I’ve always used Autoglym car polish, works great on tar, residues etc ! Quote
Tim T Posted April 11 Report Posted April 11 I have spent 30 years in the sign and graphics industry working with a lot of sticky stuff. Both putting it on and taking it off. Gentle heat will usually remove the vinyl sometimes leaving adhesive residue. We would nearly always use white spirit to remove the adhesive residue followed by Isopropyl or lighter fuel to finally degrease. Cheers, Tim Quote
Nigel C Posted April 20 Report Posted April 20 I use Lighter fuel, comes in an excellent small can with spout, very cheap. In fact I have a can in the workshop/house/shed/caravan and couple of my site boxes. Quote
