Richardtr3a Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Has anyone here got the information that I need. I replaced the front panel and the steering box after Christmas and I have the original loom in place but I did not take any notes of how to correctly identify the colours for the connections. Can anyone send me the colours on the cables in the steering column and the main loom so that I make the correct connections. I have done it before but I kept notes, now lost. Thanks Richard Quote
RogerH Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Hi Richard all the colours should be here http://www.advanceautowire.com/tr24a.pdf Roger Quote
Richardtr3a Posted April 14 Author Report Posted April 14 Thanks for the wiring plan, but I am having trouble identifying the cables from the steering column. They all look th same and there must be a simple answer. I will be out in the garage later on. Richard Quote
Lebro Posted April 14 Report Posted April 14 Clean the wires with solvent that should brighten the colours. Bob Quote
Richardtr3a Posted April 14 Author Report Posted April 14 Thanks Bob, I have cleaned up the cables and will connect later. It looks as if moving the carburettor air cleaner would make access easier. I will be out there when it gets a bit warmer. It looks like a sunny day here, so the lawnmower is the next challenge.?? Quote
Richardtr3a Posted April 14 Author Report Posted April 14 Hi, I have connectedall the cables except one. There is a small loom ending up under the front carb. It has 1 x green / white 1 x green / red 1 x green / brown 1 x Brown wire with no stripe I think that I kept notes when I changed the steering column, but I can not find them. At present the car starts and runs OK. The headlamps do not work on full beam but are OK when dipped. The side lamps are OK. I am hoping that there are some specialists on the Forum who can explain what I have done wrong for the headlamps and the identity of the loose brown wire with no obvious home. I will look underneath tomorrow and see what I have done. The lawnmower started well and all the grass was cut front and back. So back to the TR. There is an evening TR meeting on thursday and I am nervous about the headlamps. Thanks Richard Quote
RobH Posted April 14 Report Posted April 14 That sounds like the loom that connects to the steering head Richard. It goes forward by the side of the radiator and connects to the wires from the steering column. The headlamp main beam connection is the blue/white wire which should be in the bundle of wires on the inner wing on the drivers side near the horn. I expect you have a poor connection where that joins to the wires from the lamps. Quote
Richardtr3a Posted April 14 Author Report Posted April 14 Thanks Rob that is very helpful. I have just checked the indicators and the drivers side rear light is not working. Please tell me what colour is that wire so that I can clean up the connections tomorrow. I need to be a lot more careful and have more information Richard Quote
RobH Posted April 14 Report Posted April 14 I expect you have a poor connection in the green/white wire in the same bundle on the inner wing. Those bullet connectors are prone to that if the bullets are not pushed in properly. Quote
Richardtr3a Posted April 15 Author Report Posted April 15 Thanks for the answer and I have been out in the garage this morning. The the green/white bullet was loose and the wire has slipped out. I was thinking of soldering on a new bullet, which I have on the shelf. But I think the heat destroys the cable so I am looking for advice on how to clamp the bullet on to the short green/white cable. Richard Quote
RogerH Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 (edited) Hi Richard, you need a crimping tool. This is the basic type and it works Crimper However go to Ebay as they will be cheaper. If you are crimping just the one bullet then you could experiment using your ordinary pliers. The cutting blades are usually not that special and can squeeze the bullet reasonably well - be careful though. You are correct in thinking that the heat and flux can cause a weakness. RobH Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 (edited) If you have a big enough soldering iron there won't be much damage - the trick is to have a good hot iron big enough to do the job quickly. Its messing around with a too small iron that prolongs the job and results in melted wire insualation. Anyway- you could crimp the bullet but that needs a special crimping tool. The ordinary ones won't cope. Edited April 15 by RobH typo Quote
Richardtr3a Posted April 17 Author Report Posted April 17 I was just locking the Garage doors when I found a small plastic bag with a handful of bullet connectors. Our local group leader has lent me an electricians tool which will crimp well. Is it worth trying to use solder on the regular metal bullets or only on the brass ones ? I am planning to try tomorrow lunchtime. Thanks Quote
Richardtr3a Posted April 18 Author Report Posted April 18 Thanks for the help so far .The lights are now working except the LHS front headlamp on full beam. I will investigate tomorrow but I need to know which coloured cable runs full beam. There was a single black earth which I have connected and both headlamps are working well on the dipped option. Please let me know which colour I am looking for so that the headlamps are back to normal after some more cleaning. Richard Quote
