Hello All.

I know some of you will hate this and some may be interested. Having a bit of time left over from my winter maintenance programme, I decided to install an Electronic Fuel Injection system into my 62 TR4. I can report that it is a game changer with regard to how the car runs. No particular question associated with this post but I thought it may be interesting to some people who were thinking of doing similar. I am happy to share the experience of installation etc, as there wasn't very much info around in the UK, before I embarked on this modification. Starts first time on the key every time, idles perfectly at 750rpm, pulls like a train, no hesitations, pops bangs etc.

Hi Andy,

I have been thinking about this.  What system did you use and did you do the work. I know some garages will do this.

Hi Andy

l don’t have a problem with anyone who wants to modify their cars for a better drive and reliability l know of a few with efi systems and they have not regretted it I’ll stick to strombergs only because I know what I’m doing with them

I would be interested, although my SUs are simple enough and apart from the occasional sticky float valve, they've never let me down. I think it would make a good article for TRaction

EFI is not TBI.

I elected to get the PM TBI system which is very basic compared to a four TB EFI system.

Are you pleased with it? Would you go with it again?

Hi Roger.

I used the classic fuel Injection system with the SU carbs as the throttle bodies. Did the work myself, nothing too taxing, just a lot of crawling under the car to fit the fuel lines.

If someone wants to approach me from the magazine, I would be very happy to pen something. I took a lot of videos too as I want to do a YouTube video to show how it was done.

Not sure about all that? The system I used does use the ols SU's as throttle bodies which saves money and leave the old carbs in there for better aesthetics as some people would want, just cost based for me. The system I used employs a sophisticated ECU that is fed by sensors that you install on the engine. This then allows the ECU to calculate fuel to air mix and controls it by flow to the injectors. Can't say how this wouldn't be an EFI system??

Not an expert!

Absolutely, its like a new car reliability and driving wise. Haven't had enough miles yet to say anything about fuel economy.

I would be very interested to see an article and video on this project. I’m currently rebuilding a 4a and efi has crossed my mind too.

There are a number of people over on Sideways who have installed Megasquirt and Microsquirt systems on Triumph engines  - mainly on the small sixes I think.    I'm sure there is plenty of experience there for the asking.

It has certainly crossed my mind a few times.

And mine, I did have a full kit and my 4a has the trigger wheel and pickup and the Lambda sensor and temperature sensors all still fitted and the fuel return but in the end sold it all to someone in the Midlands who was going to fit it to a TR4.

George, I have not installed it ( At the time of purchase I had a one month window to fit it but the delivery time was more than expected so that window closed) The car is off the road now for a full engine, gearbox, overdrive rebuild along with a R200 conversion and purchase of every Good Parts item available for the TR4A (suspension, hubs, spindles drive shaft, CV half shafts, disc rear brakes to match the Wilwood fronts etc)

The PM TBI looks be shipped by the electronics vendor, not PM but looks to be OK for the price ( I will probably machine my own throttle bodies)

Although EFI, TBI is 1990’s technology ( a carburetor with electronic jets/ pulsing solenoid’s) in the case of the TR4 it would rely on the stock  saimesed inlet manifolds for fuel distribution, the injectors are upstream of the throttle blades so far from perfect but should have a decent improvement in drivability. With my new 2288cc engine and 4.08 R200 it should be a real thumper.

I have not seen any bad press regarding the PM kit. The cost was competitive (around US2200 or AU$3000 landed after attracting no import duty) I did get the ECU controlled ignition option but will machine a new distributor over using the Lucas body.

Interesting to see how you fitted the anti roll bar through the towing eye - and you have them on both sides?

That is how the car came to me.It handles OK at speed but of course a horse and cart compared to my Mk5 GTI.

I will make a new radiator guard to mount the bigger Good Parts front anti roll and also top hat insert the chassis rails for the GP rear anti roll bar.

I recall no problem removing it, perhaps the plates were bolted to the chassis (I am at work 5000km from home so can’t look) They will go in a plastic bin with all the other discarded stock parts.
