Snowflakes have stopped encouraging it which is a shame….of course other cultures can celebrate whatever

We still celebrate in Pinner.   The High Street is closed on nearest Sunday and the famous wheel barrow race commences plus attractions, sales stallls, live music, Punch a Judy Morris dancing, and street food.  Very well attended and enjoyable family afternoon in the sun.

More importantly, IMHO, today is SHAKESPEARE'S BIRTHDAY!

So Happy 462nd, William!  Let the celebrations begin!  "To me, fair friend, you never can be old"

What is more important than St.George.

When, precisely, was the last time you saw a dragon walking down your high St.reet?

Ireland has no snakes (thank you St.Patrick)
England have no Dragons (thank you Georgy boy)

St. George was a Turk!   He is also the patron saint of  Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Ukraine, Malta, Ethiopia, Catalonia and Aragon, and the cities of Moscow and Beirut.    How's about that, Fat Blokes who string up a flag on a lamp post?

They would be better off memorising Will's:

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for her self
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in a silver sea
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

How's about that,

How about it?    Seems rather irrelevant John and I wasn't aware there was any limit on the number of countries that can claim a patron saint nor that said saint had to be a national of the claiming country.

Actually he wasn't a Turk either, since Turkey as an entity didn't exist at the time.  Then the area was known as  Cappadocia which became a province of the  Roman Empire.   He was supposedly a Cappadocian Greek who was a member of Roman emperor Diocletian's Pretorian Guard.

Hi Clive

most areas do their own thing travelling here and there.

The South east area have for a good many years all get gether together. This year they are down at the 'HollyCombe Steam in the Country' near Liphook in Hampshire.

The various groups in the East area where you are are all doing something somewhere.

It is relevant when some claim a special exceptionalism for St.George and the English.

Yes, Cappadocia is an area that today is part of Turkey, that would have been Greek speaking then.     Whatever, our George was hardly a Geordie!

I was pretty sure that there would be stuff going on ,but, there doesn't seem to be any communication to that effect on the events pages, either local or national as in yhe past.

Our Chilterns group is meeting at the Esso in Thame 0845 Sunday and heading up to the  Midland Air Museum & Coventry Airport to arrive around 1130am. See museum then head our various ways back to Buckinghamshire…

If TRR members look on the website, they will find many groups posting their DID runs. Here in west Wales, we collaborate with the Pembrokeshire Classic Car Club on a run over the Preseli.
