Surely there’s a venue more central to everyone if l remember we had a cracking day at silverstone with the MG club a couple of years back and it was well attended Chris 'Cos we like it there Quote
openroad Posted May 7 Report Posted May 7 Agreed Malvern is a great venue , a decent drive there, and if camping or similar, a reasonably priced weekend. Also nice air b and b , and hotels, good food in Malvern town, treat yourself and the lady in your life, it's worth it. Conrad. Quote

Remember it well, especially the infamous monsoon on the way home. It was after that scary journey that I immediately set about fitting fog lights, high level brake lights, hazard warning lights etc. Quote

We were going on to stay up near Pickering and me and Albert were absolutely soaked to the skin, no fun driving in the TR and then having everything hanging up to dry in the hotel room after including the tent! It isn't central to the country that is the issue, it is central to the active members. In the past it has been considered that the majority are in the South of the country. But that isn't all the answer. Some owners actually want to drive to a destination, not have the destination brought to them. A few years back we decanted to Harrogate ( a fine part of the world) but very few North East members turned up and hardly any from Scotland. Yet Malvern attracts the Scots, Irish, Dutch etc etc. Anyway only Malvern has Elgar Roger I used to enjoy Malvern in the naughties . Went them all except the infamous 2007. there were loads of discussions to change it and eventually we lost our prime end of July booking and went to Harrogate - think that was 2011 ?? It took just as long to get to Harrogate from central Scotland as it did to get all the way down to Malvern . Can’t say I liked it at Harrogate , camp site wasn’t flat and the shower blocks were awful . Stayed in a hotel in the town the next time the show went to Harrogate . Not the same experience and I haven’t been back for a few years now due to other commitments . I’m really looking forward to Malvern this year . Was actually planning my route this morning. Think a Friday 4am set off will hopefully get me there early afternoon 🤞. Back up the road Monday. As long as the tr3 plays ball . have to sort my camping gear though. It’s not been out in 10 years . I’ve been going to Malvern for car shows since the mid 80s . I think the venue is perfect. Quote
John Morrison Posted May 7 Report Posted May 7 Scott be sure to say Hello if you get there John 👍👍 Quote

John Morrison Posted May 7 Report Posted May 7 To be finalised went to Shelton Mallet last time, got talking, not like me, and never got the tent out of the boot! Kipped in the car that’s the Eurobox For me these meets now are all about friendships John Quote

Going back home was no fun in storm Bertha with Alfie the lurcher cowering under the tonneau. A total journey of nearly 600 miles so hardly nearby, Malvern is over 400 miles away and I have bought my ticket along with other members of the Clyde Valley group. Cheers Richard Quote
Scott M Posted May 8 Report Posted May 8 I know the pain John , first time I went to Malvern in mid 80s I was young and even stupider and forgot a tent ! Quote
Scott M Posted May 8 Report Posted May 8 Richard - that was the one we all ended up camped on a slope was it not ? Uncomfortable few nights Quote
Dic Doretti Posted May 8 Report Posted May 8 You are right Scott, not a great place for camping. I was at the Doretti 60th anniversary dinner on the Saturday night so just happy to find my tent where Alfie was already fast asleep! It was great to see red kites circling the showground but they disappeared when the Vulcan bomber flew over but it was disappointing that a number of TR traders didn't bother making the journey north. Cheers Richard Quote
Scott M Posted May 8 Report Posted May 8 Have to admit to not remembering the Red Kites or the Vulcan but do remember the trade stand area was pretty poor Quote
Chilliman Posted May 8 Report Posted May 8 Aah, the memories of that event continue.....I hadn't had my green TR4 very long at the time but long enough to consider she may not make the 12hr return journey so I set off from North Devon with my son Tristan who was about 18 at the time, towing my TR4 on a trailer (I had hired) behind my Landrover Discovery auto that made it as far as Gloucestershire on the M5 at which point it blew a transmission line.. I got recovered back home & remember to this day standing on the driveway about half six in the evening in North Devon wondering what to do. I made the decision to pack the TR with as much of our clothes/camping equipment/tools etc as possible that were in the back of the Landy & drive up to Harrogate in the 4. We arrived on site about 2 in the morning , absolutely knackered. I had phoned ahead to ensure we would still be able to get access to the site & having arrived I managed to locate the Devon group camp which from memory was on a grassy slope leading down to a lake. We both slept in the car for the rest of that night. At daybreak we set camp & took stock of our situation. The car was still running but getting increasingly rough & more & more difficult to start but we had booked to go and do the Harewood Hill Climb so off we went with everyone else. We got there but the car was getting worse, I had a lot of help offered including a new set of HT leads & managed to drive the hill & get back to the campsite. After a bit of head scratching the problem was identified as the cheapo dizzy I had bought to run the car while the original was with Martin (Dizzy Doc) being rebuilt. The shaft on the cheapo was so rough it was wearing the lobe on the points arm causing the points to close up. The car then took us back home safely in some of the very worst driving conditions I have ever experienced. It was at that point I decided 'she's a keeper' I have now rebuilt her twice toured extensively & lastly converted her into a very competitive competition car & made many life long friends along the way. Got to love a TR4. Quote

We had a TR5 that lost it's wipers, got home on RainX and a tight convoy with TR's in front and behind. Happy Days Quote

Drewmotty Posted May 9 Report Posted May 9 We travelled from our home in South Wales and met John and Tristan for the first time that weekend when they camped next to us. We have been firm friends ever since and now live less than 10 minutes appart in North Devon. Quote
