Hi all in order to clean/replace operating valve just removed transmission cover on my TR4 to get at the operating valve plug.

The 7/16 plug was rounded and I've made it worse. Tried mole grips and ( careful) heat which is the limit of my engineering skill.

Any suggestions and why was it so tight in the first place?

Hi John you can buy sockets that are designed for this problem , or l have in the past managed to get the nearest metric ring spanner ( 7/16 is 11 mm so a used 10mm spanner) tapped on and usually it’s a tight enough fit to undo

Many thanks folks. Roger I assume the plug is ferrous metal if I have to ask someone to weld.

I'll try that as a last resort.

Have you sourced a replacement or will you fettle what comes out and put it back.?

Pipe plugs are cheap!  It’s a trivial replacement — I wouldn’t consider putting a messed-up plug back into service.

That’s probably what you’re hinting at Peter, eh?

I don’t think the issue is the filler plug.  could be wrong…..

Thats the steel capped hex plug.   Item 68 in this pic.

Yep, thats what I thought.

A 7/16"6 sided socket should do the job, if not file the flats(or remains of) down to fit a smaller 6 sided socket (11mm, or even 10mm)

Ah -- you're right!  I got sidetracked in the mentioned of double-square sockets.

One of the grippy sockets mentioned by Marco or Roger's suggestion to weld a nut to it are the way to go.  Heat and a sharp rap on the nut are never a bad thing when one is being recalcitrant.

About 3 years back I was in Texas and knew I had a knackered nut on something on the car. I popped into a car parts/tool shop and got one of these. You hand tighten it onto the problematic nut, plugs into ½ socket shaft and it solved the problem and now lives in my travelling toolbag. Hopefully you can get one here…?

The hex is small and not that high with the added bonus of the flange being recessed into the case when installed, not a problem perhaps if some form of anti seize was used sparingly including on the copper washer. The room to work in is quite restricted being close to the main case, if you have a M.I.G welder, tacking a nut onto the plug would be easy enough or cutting a slot in the head (if enough material left) with a Dremel would allow an impact driver with large slot head to be used?

I couldn't find any name on it (having long ago thrown away the US card) but I did just find on eBay this one that appears to be identical to mine Stuart. At £12 its a very handy addition.

Steve  - it's not the one in your link - I'm referring to the one in the 5th post from the start of the thread from Z320 - it's a completely different type of socket - unfortunately, I don't know how to copy that to here.

Hi Rich,

I don't know how they are called at the UK, at Germany they are called "Linksausdreher Nüsse"

Try "extractor nut set", aviable for a nice price.

AP1GczOgLIZ7XPRceJfNgEsJSXwFQTERBSYdpAAN

They are made for example for a 1/2" drive but better you buy a set which also have a hex head.

So you can also use them with the 1/2" drive and on limited space with a spanner.

Ciao, Marco

We call them “nut and bolt extractors” here.

A set of nine costs less than £13 at our national discount tools chain, Harbor Freight.

(Although I’m not sure HF allow their site to be viewed from outside the USA…)
