Scott M Posted Tuesday at 09:38 PM Author Report Posted Tuesday at 09:38 PM While it is not legal to have different size on same axle and you could get charged with it , as they are close it is probably unlikely unless involved in a serious rta which required your car to be fully examined. that said if you meet a traffic cop with a point to prove or get hauled into a vosa check site you could get charged , issued a vdrs , given a ticket etc . Trumpy3 Posted Tuesday at 11:07 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 11:07 PM 155 - 165.......I run 195x65 and you can notice the difference in both width and diam. Since fitting my alloy wheels and good tubeless tyres, I have not had a flat...touch wood. Actually in the 26 years and over 100000 mls I have had this car, I have only had one issue. On a run with a number of other members when still running wires, I had a tyre go half down but another member had a pump and I was able to get to the next town OK. The member who provided the pump also carried a tube which was lucky because the only tyre fitter in that town never carried a suitable new one. Brian Quote
Ralph Whitaker Posted Wednesday at 07:57 AM Report Posted Wednesday at 07:57 AM My plan is to revert to 165s on the car instead of the 185s currently fitted. I was going to do it this year but I couldn`t bring myself to discard 4 perfectly good tyres and instead spent the money on a new wheel free hydraulic ramp. Next year the tyres will be 8 years old and it will ease my pain at throwing them away. Even if I change the tyres I am still left with a problem as my wheels are TR6 so 5 or 5.5 inch and the flat still will not fit in the compartment, and the wheel for the spare will still be technically illegal being narrower, but at least the tyres will be all the same size. I fancy a set of Minilites, but has anyone on here tried one of these in the spare compartment, at least they won`t have the protrusion where the spinner fits but will a 5 inch minilite go in. John Morrison Posted Wednesday at 09:08 AM Report Posted Wednesday at 09:08 AM Ralph first 165 will fit on TR 6 wheels no issue secondly, I think, you are legal with different size wheels I.e. a 4 inch spare wheel would be alright it’s different size tyres on the same axle that is illegal John Quote
david ferry Posted Wednesday at 09:14 AM Report Posted Wednesday at 09:14 AM 12 hours ago, RobH said: It is legal if the tyre is a 'get-you-home' space saver supplied by the car maker and you abide by the speed limit for the tyre. There are lots of modern (ish) cars with those and the disparity between widths is very great. Whether you can do that legally on a classic is a good question but I doubt there are many people who could spot the difference between a 155 and a 165 tyre at a distance. No, you cannot, unless it's OE from the manufacturer. Anything else isn't legal, and possibly creates issues with roadworthyness and insurance. Whether the difference is spotted, or not, really isn't relevant. David Quote
Trev Good Posted Wednesday at 03:33 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 03:33 PM I only made the point as I was unlucky enough to get a double puncture on my horse lorry and whilst the spare was fitted, the tyre repairers in Weston super Mare didn't have the right width but put a slimmer tyre on the inside of the axle, all okay? No, got stopped by traffic cop near Cardiff and was done for it...even after explaining! Quote
Trumpy3 Posted Thursday at 01:58 AM Report Posted Thursday at 01:58 AM Boy, glad we do not run the same rules as you do. We are allowed to run wheel rims up to 1" over any wheel available from the manufacturer at the time of manufacturer. We claim 4.5" rims were available and as such 5.5" rims are acceptable. Don H. Posted Thursday at 03:10 AM Report Posted Thursday at 03:10 AM Glad we too here get to do almost anything. My state has no inspections and hardly any interest in someone who seems to be generally minding their own business. IMO, there's little that's dangerous or risky about (possibly) driving a few miles to get home with a 155 tyre on one corner and 165 tires on the others. This one was driving around Santa Fe the other week after putting in an appearance at our local Cars & Coffee. And I should worry about less than ½" of tyre and wheel height if I had to mount the spare on my TR? Quote
BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted Thursday at 06:38 AM Report Posted Thursday at 06:38 AM (edited) I like the bullet holes in the door Don. I'd struggle to move let alone fit a spare tyre that size. Edited Thursday at 07:12 AM by BlueTR3A-5EKT Quote
