Z320 Posted June 10 Author Report Posted June 10 Yes, but as the problem remains I missed something. The turn of the steering wheel to the left, to the right, next back again is not much - but obvious. This may be a 1/4 - 1/2 turn of the tie rods. Yesterday I ordered material to make a clamp like Roy adviced. Ciao. Marco Quote
roy53 Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 Marco if you look at the moss part 667-296 you will see a part that I am sure you could make with your skills . This goes over the casting of the rack and the lower solid rack mount looks better than the exhaust clamp and straps we have but very effective. Roy Quote
Z320 Posted June 12 Author Report Posted June 12 (edited) Hi, today my lovely wife assisted me, she turning strong on the steering wheel, me touching the steering rack and its housing. And yes, the rack IS TIGHT, but the housing slightly moves / wobbles --> is not tight on the tube anymore! I finish the clamp, install it and hope it helps for the moment. Very likely scrap the rack next winter. At the moment I wait for the exhaust clamp. Ciao, Marco Edited June 12 by Z320 Quote
Z320 Posted June 21 Author Report Posted June 21 (edited) Hi, the exhaust clamp is in and this is my construction (with a 38 mm dummy). Both center lines are 33 mm above the steel plate. I fitted it, adjusted the steering new and had a test drive: all OK at the moment. If the problem of the twisted RH / LH steering wheel does not appear anymore, the steering gearbox slack on the tube indeed is the problem. But how can I be sure to buy and new reliable one? About the problem I write an article for our club magazin with more photos. Ciao, Marco Edited June 22 by Z320 Quote

Ciao, Marco It is a problem to find really reliable racks these days hence why so many are having originals rebuilt, I suspect your best bet would be to try and find an ex US one that is suitable for refurb. TR Shop London may have one as I know they have broken a number of ex US cars. Stuart. Quote

Z320 Posted June 22 Author Report Posted June 22 (edited) Hi Roy, did you notice anything before, like me the twisted steering wheel? Hopefully you have not been involved in an car accident and did not hurt?!? The rack was a repro rack? On my original rack I can not see any roll pins or something that has been fitted to fix the gearbox housing on the tube. How is it made? Why is the original safer? Is it indeed safer? Ciao, Marco nothing noticed This is a race car so with sticky tyres . Yes was an circuit crash but due to safety features no injuries repro quick rack Revingtons so hopefully good!!!!! not sure why the originals survive better , but after my original post i was contacted by several competition TR drivers with the same scary tales. TR Tony for example on a rally in forests. Because of this is the reason i tried the moss option , but the one they sent didn't fit my standard rack fit . Looked good one piece alloy just didn't fit over the ridge on the rack Roy Quote
