Good Morning All,

I just wondered if any of the TR7 / Dolomite Sprint Hillclimbers have had any issues with bedding in an uprated clutch assembly. My complete clutch system has been replaced and as far as I am aware allis as it should be, but selecting a gear is difficult without being brutal. It has been suggested that I should get the car into gear and drive slipping the clutch until it beds in.

Thanks for any experiences or thoughts.

Regards,

Cliff

Sorry cliff I don’t run a 7 but I have changed my 3a to a modern diaphragm clutch on a minimalist flywheel.

i would have thought that this is something that should just work - if set up right. Sounds like you are not getting it fully released with the clutch pressed.

is the brutal selection just when selecting 1st before moving off or on all gears when moving ?

if just 1st can you start it in gear with the clutch depressed ? And it’s ok ?

if on all gears is it better with a slow change and the clutch to the floor ?

I know with mine it only needs a 1/2 to 3/4 press to be able to change gear which is the biting point

Hi Hamish,

Thanks for that.

It would appear that you have a similar set-up on your 3 as I have on my 3, which I did not have any issues with.

On the 7 I can select 2nd, but with a bit of a bang, and the car can be started in first and reverse with the clutch fully depressed, but there is drag when in gear with the clutch fully depressed. I have installed a spacer in the slave cylinder in an attempt to have maximum travel, which was also needed with the previous clutch assembly as the flywheel has been skimmed just enough to clean it up.

My worst fear is that it is not a similar issue I had with a 2.5 PI which I had many years ago which would eat a clutch in short order, it transpired that the engine backplate was not straight and flat causing the issue. A new backplate cured the problem. I have just installed the rebuilt engine in the 7 and I hope that I do not need to take out the gearbox, or the engine and gearbox to replace the backplate.

I shall try the slipping the clutch to bed it in and hope that it works.

Thanks,

Cliff

Sorry cliff you need someone cleverer than I and with the specific model experience.

may be you can be clever with master and slave cylinder diameters to gain greater movement ?

if you do face book you could try the folk on the clubs championship page ?
