RogerH Posted June 2 Report Posted June 2 Hi Folks, just starting to tidy up my 4A radiator and am wondering why the top hose connector on the rad points upwards slightly - Why? Pointing straight out rearwards would be better - wouldn't it.? Roger Quote
Z320 Posted June 2 Report Posted June 2 It point up because it is lower than the connector of the thermostat housing? This does not point down because the aluminum cast is easier to fix and mill 90°? Quote
RogerH Posted June 2 Author Report Posted June 2 On my 4a the radiator sits a little high and the upward tilt of the top hose connector puts it further upward. If I lowered the rad then the top tank would be full but the top of the block would be empty. It needs to the other way round. Roger Quote

Roger That’s how they should sit Roger, I’m sure Marco has explained the mechanics of the water levels before, this is how mine sits, any higher and the overflow pipe rubs on the underside of the bonnet frame. Z320 Posted June 3 Report Posted June 3 Yes, the rad higher rubs the bonnet frame. Guess why I know Quote

Guess why I know Probably the same way as me when I first built the car all those years ago and noticed paint being rubbed off the bonnet frame, thick rubber shims removed under the mountings and replaced with thinner just gives enough clearance. Z320 Posted June 3 Report Posted June 3 I angled it slightly backwards, I’ll make photos later today Quote
RogerH Posted June 3 Author Report Posted June 3 Hi Stuart/Marco thanks for that. My odd logic was that I wanted the rad higher so the head and thermostat housing were full of coolant. I appreciate that an expansion bottle would aid this but I do not have such a bottle at the moment.. More decisions. Roger Quote
Z320 Posted June 3 Report Posted June 3 Here photos from my TR4A, with the rad correctly filled the thermostat housing is nearly empty, I don't worry this. The rad touched the bonnet frame, it needed some years until I noticed it (now black painted) On the frame the contact was with the rusty part, but it is visible someone used a hammer to get some space for a not suitabel rad. This must have been at the USA, where the car came from in 1992 Ciao, Marco Quote
RogerH Posted June 3 Author Report Posted June 3 Hi Marco many thanks. That explains a great deal. Roger Quote
