Rob W Posted June 11 Report Posted June 11 hi all. converting my 62 to rhd, fitted a new rhd steering rack. the drivers side tie rod seems to protrude far more than the passenger and I can't get the track rod end screwed on any more on the right hand side to make the steering straight. Am I missing something? does the rack need centralising before fitment? Quote

Of course, it always needs to be centralised before fitting for not only the rod ends but also steering wheel position and indicator cancel spigot as well Stuart. Quote

John Not according to the workshop manual, it says turn lock to lock, count the number of turns on the pinion shaft and then halve it to find the centre. Theres no way a pin going through the grease nipple hole would work as theres a pressure pad in the way. Stuart. Quote
Z320 Posted June 12 Report Posted June 12 (edited) Hi, the pressure pad is drilled through, this is the way the grease get on the bar. But at least on my old steering rack there is no "centering hole" in the middle of the bar. The middle of the bar is most worn by the pressure pad, quickly less to the left and right - and this can not be repaired. The pad correctly shimmed on my rack rebuild the bar did not move much left / right off from the center. This is why IMO any old rack can't be really restored and why I bought a new one in 2014 - with other problems now... I already heard the argue: "it is a bit strong after the rebuilt and must bed in" --> this means, the pressure pad must wear out as soon and much as possible to get the full way of travel back 😄 Ciao, Marco Edited June 12 by Z320 Quote
