Hi,

I ask because I wonder about a friends problems with the narrow fan belt conversion fitted on his TR4A.

The aluminium of the water pump pulley has been pressed away under the load of the nut.

Now the pulley grinds on the top stud and he can’t get the pulley off.

I always thought it is a special aluminium or a steel sleeve is pressed in the center?

Ciao, Marco

The top pulley looks to be a direct copy of the steel item in aluminium (6061 perhaps) which does not seem wise. What is between the inner side of the pulley and what the pulley seats on (to stop deformation, a steel washer?) and what is under the outer nut to spread the load and stop deformation once again. It would be easy enough to machine it to be fit for purpose even if the outer face needed reducing to have a steel washer and thread stick out on the nut. Being broached and a key, surely the (nyloc) nut does not need excessive tightening.

Hi,

why aren't aluminum pulleys used in the automotive industry?

This example will give you the answer.

Enjoy! Ralf

To salvage a similarly badly worn aluminium water pump pulley I radially drilled  and tapped 3 holes to accept 1/8" grub screws.  That centralised the pulley.  Internally fitted steel face washers to realign the pulley groove  That worked fine for a few thousand miles

Scrapped it in the end and went to a Racetorations billet pump with pressed on pulley
