Simon Lait Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 The water pump on my TR4 is making a horrid noise so I’m going take it off and send it to E P services in Wolverhampton for a refurb. I’m going to take the opportunity to put on a narrow fan belt and replace the original generator with an alternator. So this post is seeking to update the advice on this perennial discussed job. My car is fitted with LED headlights which considerably reduce the power requirements, but I am planning electrically assisted power steering. Following a trawl of previous forum discussion I’m thinking something like a 50 amp Nippon Denso unit would suit. Before I start the job, here are my issues. What is the part number for the appropriate unit, and where should I get it? Does any one supply the oft recommended heat shield to stop the exhaust cooking the new unit? Can I get an off the shelf fitting kit with the appropriate unit spacers and bolts to line the new unit up properly, and provide the pulleys for the new narrow belt. Any advice gratefully received Quote
trchris Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 Hi Simon I don’t know the alternator you need , when l did the 4a l had l managed to get a genuine 15amp Lucas unit ( didn’t want to overload the wires ) TR shop or TRGB will be able to sort the items regarding bolts and spacers , and pulley kit .As for the heat shield depending on the size of alternator will depend on shape and size, it’s a good idea to make your own some don’t even use one and have no issues but I’m in favour of fitting one Chris Quote
james christie Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 If you are a member of the Register, have a dig in the archives of the magazine Traction and you should find an article written by Ian Cornish and a little bit by myself on this very subject. If you can't find just let us know and I'll post the article. james Quote
PaulAnderson Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 (edited) I bought a 40A Nippon Denso unit myself, purchased from someone but it ultimately came from Bastuck , here on their shop. There’s no worries about the diodes overheating like you can get on others ( minimised with a heat shield - unnecessary with the Nippon Denso unit) and it’s been faultless for years. Hamish Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 When I did mine I bought this https://ebay.io/m/ZHilYE and the racetorations fitting kit and it works great. I could even rewire the connections in the control box with the help on here. Quote

mark canaday Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 There is a GM alt that was used on the 90's Samurai. The GM# is 19298424. It is cheap and fits right up and can use the OE pulley if desired. Picked one up for 100$ us off ebay recently. Simon, get the uprated water pump!! MD Quote
Simon Lait Posted Thursday at 07:52 PM Author Report Posted Thursday at 07:52 PM Thanks for all the advice. I’ve got a fairly clear picture of the options. Hope to complete the job this year. Will post a report on completion. Thanks for all the excellent contributions. Simon. Quote
Malbaby Posted Thursday at 09:37 PM Report Posted Thursday at 09:37 PM (edited) Hi Simon....Have you considered fitting a higher output alternator due to the intended EPAS? As a matter of interest are you intending to purchase an off the shelf unit such as "Ezisteer" or similar EPAS unit, or fabricating your own ? I fitted a 6cyl narrow belt water pump. From memory one of the mount holes had to be elongated. Fitting a narrow belt harmonic balancer? Edited Thursday at 09:53 PM by Malbaby Quote
