Modification to the TR4A Exhaust - Additional Support Bar 147399

I have a number of original Standard Triumph Engineering Change Sheets for the TR4 and TR4A which are very informative for verifying the various points when changes, modifications, additions and alterations were made during the production of our cars.

However I have one for the TR4A dated 24-10-66 which I really cannot make any sense of and below I have quoted the exact statements made.

Description Of Change : Front Exhaust Junction Cover Top and Bottom Faces joined together to reduce Pipe Resonance.

Quality Department and Engineering request.

Drg. Mod. DC.409/66 Refers.

This Black EC. Cancels & Replaces Red E.C.8701

Authority for Change :-  Chassis D.O. (S.C.N. C 489 / 66)

Production Instructions :- To be incorporated as soon as stocks have been used up.

Spares & Service Instructions. Service with latest Assy when stocks have been returned to Production (See Drg. Mod. DC.409 / 66)

Plus the following in the three adjacent columns : -

I cannot find any links or clues to the drawing, the part number and nothing appears in the TR4A Spare Part Catalogue however as Triumph were always so short of money as far as I am aware they never updated any of the Catalogues..?

This part appears to be something to do with vibrations, so am I on the right lines thinking it is the joint between the exhaust manifold and downpipe or possibly is it the front downpipes into the first horizontal pipe as it mentions a cover to top and bottom faces.

Therefore I wonder if any TR4A owners might have some answers, seen or had an odd looking cover or possibly a bracket attached on their car.

Any suggestions or information would be most welcome.

Probably more like a bar between the two pipes where they entered the front box,

Interesting.

As Stuart remarks could be a simple angled strap attached to the exhaust clamps on the joint of the down pipe to front Y or resonator.   Bit like the dangly bracket on TR5/6 rear silencer front mount.    Just guesses though.

Do BMH in Witney recognise the part number in the collection of factory drawings they hold?

From a spares point of view I would find a copy of the Standard Triumph 1971/2 spares price list.   (Shiny white covers landscape format)

That was the definitive price list before Unipart took control of spares supply for the BMC/Rover/Stanpart companies.    The really useful part of that price list is it gives vehicle application, like the codes against part numbers in the front of the spare parts books.   If the part number is in that spares price list it was a part available to order.

Sorry I do not have one, nor know where to inspect one.     John Kipping had one.   We had one at Cox and Buckles, but that vanished.   Probably because it  was very out of date and was dumped to stop undercharging for parts by mistake.  

When we cleared Unipart’s tech library that was one item notably missing.  Got all the BMC and Rover historic parts price lists though   Not to mention tech bulletins & parts books etc.   They rang us with a message.   “We are dumping our old library, if you want it come and get it. “.   A Sherpa van full later we had it.

Thank you for you comments, quite a complex history involved.

I have just listed another Topic regarding the operation of the TR4A clutch which you may well be able to shed some light on.
