Hi Hamish

It would be good if that front suspension could be made more weather proof.
But in the abscense of such a thing a more timely break down/clean/rebuild regime would be the answer.

I wonder if a marine engine eg stern gland or outboard motor grease would be good. Certainly designed to cope with wet salty environments

That was the Quicksilver one I quoted earlier, designed for outboard motor drive bearings etc .https://www.force4.co.uk/item/Quicksilver/2-4-C-Lube-227g/GD0?stock=21204&srsltid=AfmBOorUBz8mQlOHTXKjRl1RsttT2q5iKee65Rk-wNEUbitecSBvqNj9bao

Following this thread, & having some spare time, I jacked up the front, & greased the outer wishbone ends (no problem), the offside trunnion (no problem) tried to grease the nearside, & although I had soft soldered the base to the body, it sprung a leak, & most of my applied grease shot out sideways. Some did make it through to the top, but I think before the Malvern trip I will take that side apart, & re-solder the base.

Bob,

This thread prompted me to do exactly the same this lunchtime, and... One of the trunion bases blew off slightly!!!. I had soldered the other but for some reason this one was as it came from the suppliers.

What I'm wondering is do you think it is possible to push the base back in (it's sitting at a bit of an angle , not completely out) and peen the brass bit back over it. Some grease did reach the top even with it like this, so I'd be happy if I can just seal it a bit more and not 100%. as I think it will still be able to get the semi-fluid grease to the top.

It's just such a faff removing the trunion on sidescreen cars.

I don't think that will work, & you risk chipping parts of the rim away if you hammer it.  I thought I had made a good job of soldering, but clearly had left a weak point..

I have never had a non soldered one that hasn't leaked.

Bob,

I get your point.

The problem with trying to solder it now that it has been well greased is removing ALL the oil/grease from the joint, otherwise the solder will never stick.

I'm sure you know that as clean as it may look, as soon as you apply heat the oil/grease will "creep" out of the joint again.

Maybe some cold method, like JB weld would work better. You may even be able to do that without stripping the suspension down too much.

Is it possible to remove the hub/brake disk, and the top ball joint and then unscrew the upright ?

If so you could spin the trunion 180 degrees and work on it, still attached to the lower wishbones, but upside down.

Hi Folks

to finish off my part of this saga.

All the parts for the suspension where eventually sourced and fitted. The VL is a 2nd hand jobbie but in good condition.
I had a stumbling block last Sunday. I noticed that the offside steering rack gaiter was well knackered.
So Monday morning I popped off to Chiswick and picked up a new gaiter for the 4A.  Sadly my steering rack is not from a 4A.
I then realised  it was MGB but a TRiumph 2000 boot fits perfectly.

So monday lunchtime I am trying to find a source for MG and or TRiumph saloon spares to be had that day.  I came up toatlly defeated.
With Moss moving north there is nobody down south of Cambridge that does spares.

In the end, at 1pm, I set sail to Lincoln's fair city.  It is a long way. 3 hours there and 3 to get back.
Thankfully they had all that I needed and more. So not a completely wasted journey but it took allllllll day - home at apprx 7.45pm.

Today I got the wheels pointing in the right direction.  If anybody needs their tracking ect done   I would recommend Feltham Tyre Centre  on  the A312 Hayes/feltham area   https://www.felthamtyre.co.uk/

Hi Roger,

They mostly used to concentrate on the Triumph Saloon stuff, but if in need in the future you could try Wins International just off the A22 near East Grinstead, they've expanded their range in recent years so worth a phone call at least.

Think I would have rung Midnight Motors in Watford.   Good starting point as they are a good ‘old fashioned’ retail motor factor.

I recently used them to supply off the shelf a 74° waxstat type thermostat for my TR.   Plus I can get there on the train using the Lioness Line, using my Freedom Pass.  (3 minute walk from Watford junction Station.)

They were trading at the last North London group meeting I went to in Kings Langley.

Tri 2000 manual rack is a TR one with different tie rod ends and maybe a longer rack bar, but the case is the same    The power steering rack is same as Stag.
