Hi David l think the yellow stripe ones are for the 250

Chris

that's what i was thinking but couldnt find any internet photos of an original TR5 engine bay

No Peter, TR5 hoses were plain black. TR250, US 1969 TR6's and RoW spec 1969 TR6's wore black and gold hoses.  TR6's from and incliuding the 1970 models were green.

At Gernany we have „Golden snake“ quality water hoses (real rubber with textile, not PVC) from „Continental“.

This is why „bumble bee“ hoses anywhere else than on houses and garden make me wonder.

Don‘t feel impressed about my statement

David,

Alan is correct, black hoses on TR5.

So I’ve had a look at my old original top hose, stored for many years and attach

a photo.

i think the only hose that had a yellow stripe on a 5 was the servo hose.

Roy, the TR5 press release pack images and the TR5 brochure show the servo hose as the only hose with a yellow stripe. Attached for info is a factory image of one of the press car engine bays, this shows the yellow stripe on the hose (in black & white). For those interested it is negative number 71947 taken  on the 27th September 1967. Some of the other details in the image might be of interest to those concours car owners.

Interesting to see the PRV inline on the tank return from the metering unit and also that a PCV is also fitted in the same place as it was on my TR250 when I bought it and that it has an oil cooler fitted too.

Maybe I'm misreading your comment, but didn't your 250 have the PCV mounted to the intake manifold between the carbs?

Interesting to see the PCV on both photos IMO don’t work.

On the first photo it is not fitted on the inlet manifold and if it is fitted to any vacuum the seperated oil can’t flow back (upwards) to the rocker cover.

On the second photo it not only sucks vapors from the engine but also fresh air from under the bonnet. This should reduce the ability to seperate oil.

Mine is a feb 69 registered 5 and my fuel pump has always been at the back and the pcv was the plastic one fitted to the rocker cover probably like the TR6

This is how it was originally fitted (First picture) it didnt really do anything more than dump engine condensate down the front of the engine, obviously not how Triumph had them fitted originally and then after I had rebuilt all the linkages and generally sorted all the engine out I fitted it as per the second photo and it worked really well there.

Clever.

PCV tipping downwards in line between engine and inlet manifold and that is ‘T’d at the manifold with a non return valve to the servo.   Good reinterpretation.

Ah, now I see now,

thank you for pointing on that,

that works!

It certainly did, it was from experience with my first 4a many years ago that was running rough until I discovered the diaphragm in the PCV was split.

Reading this topic struck a chord because I had seen a reference to Gold and Black hoses amongst the collection of Standard Triumph Engineering Change Sheets I have.

The Engineering Change Sheet found is labelled DEC 9087 and has two dates 30-6-67 and 10-8-67 the latter being on the cusp of production commencing, which Bill Piggott tells us happened on 29th August 1967.

Description of Change

Introduction of gold & black striped hoses in place of plain black.

Production Instructions

Class III Introduce as soon as available in car sets for all markets.

Use up stocks of existing black hoses on markets other than U.S.A.

                                     (No Heater Condition)

This document demonstrates that this was a very late change, issued on 10-8-67 with the instruction for the gold and black hoses to be introduced into production as soon as the hoses were available.

Production started just 19 days later, therefore with insufficient time to produce the gold and black hoses it has been confirmed that the first cars were fitted with black hoses.

Does anyone know how long it actually took to obtain stocks of the gold and black hoses to enable them to be introduced in the TR5..?

From the comment in the Production Instructions, it is very apparent that Triumph placed great importance on the market in the U.S.A.

Regards, Richard
