Petrol filler cap

We have just returned from a 1400 mile trip to the 'All Triumph Drive In' in Madras, Oregon. The air temps were in the high 30s during our trip, metal bits were considerably higher. On the last day I went to fill up with petrol, I found that the glue? holding the magnet in the cap had lost its bond, it wasn't soft, in fact it was crispy but no bond. I was wondering if anyone experienced similar during the recent high temps in the UK? 

Any thoughts on the best adhesive to use resetting the magnet. 

This may only apply to TR5/250, not sure about other models.

I repaired the magnet on my TR250’s fuel cap about five years ago with a good quality two-component epoxy, @graeme.. I used a filled epoxy to minimize any shrinkage in the adhesive as it cured, but truly any grade should work with well-cleaned surfaces.  The epoxy cured with the cap closed to ensure the toroidal magnet and the steel closing surface were flat and parallel.  One can see a bit of the epoxy extruded from the edges of the magnet here;

The cap is on my office bookshelf now living an easy life, not on a car, but the repair has held perfectly.  

It’s the only piece I saved when the TR250 (my very first car in 1978) got scrapped and parted out in 1981. I keep thinking it would look nice fitted to my TR3B…

Hi Graeme,

for me it looks like the magnet has been fixed with PU glue.

And this has failed because of its age and heat. I would try to glue this with a 2 components glue.

Thats a 250 very early US 6 fitment only and as stated thats a glued repair and I wouldnt have said original.

I’d have guessed original adhesive, Stuart. My TR250’s cap looked similar — sort of an ambered brittle film — and I’ve had the cap almost fifty years. 
 

I didn’t know early TR6s had that alloy/magnetic cap too. The earliest ones I remember from 1969 were a lozenge-shaped chrome-plated diecast piece with a mechanical latch. 
 

Is there any truth to the story I heard years ago that the alloy/magnetic TR250 cap was raided from the parts catalog of what was originally on a Leyland truck?

Could be Ive seen them fitted as afterthoughts by PO . You might be right about the truck leftovers  too.
