Further to my thread:- fuel pressure problems. 

I thought I’d start a new thread.
 I have a spare Lucas pump which is a bit screechy. I thought I would buy a pump rebuild kit from tr enterprises for £46 all in. Now my thinking is that I rebuild my spare one which is now on my bench apart and looks in not too bad a condition apart from being very dry. If the rebuild doesn’t go well I’ll send the one in the car to Neil Ferguson for a refurb and test.

Has anyone any tips. i.e. on what grease I should use on the bearings and seal. The manual suggests Shell 6266 grease but I can’t find a modern equivalent. Any other suggestions are most welcome.

Did you get carbon brushes with the kit?

if not I have a NOS Lucas set with baseplate and screws.   

£15.00.  Including 2 nd class postage  to UK.

 

I also have the plastic drive coupling which I’ll throw in

Looking at the photo on the web page.

Yes that kit has the two carbon brushes loose, so you have to solder into place on your old baseplate to your existing wiring.

Do you know what lube that is required please?

Only use oil not grease. That base plate was originally for a wiper motor not a pump motor. The brushes are of a softer carbon.

Thanks Neil.   I had that conversation with Ken Mills 45 years ago when sourcing carbon brushes for Lucas pumps.

i thought 3 brush base plates were for wiper motors not the 2 brush base plate I have.

I’ve been doing a bit of research on the Lucas pump and found this very interesting document. I’ve attached it below . @BlueTR3A-5EKT the document also mentions the 2 and 3 brush plates. 

I thought it was very helpful so maybe it could be put into the pinned docs forum.

Those rebuild kits are poor quality & expensive in my view. The screws provided are self tapper while the Lucas ones are threaded. The carbon brushes don't fit in the holding slots as the  copper wire enters 90* to the brush (Lucas ones have the copper wire perpendicular to the brush). To cap it off the viton seal was missing from mine.

You can buy all the above from Amazon or Ebay for a few quid .

It's bad enough that the so-called rebuild kits are poor quality, but they don't even include any parts to refurbish the actual pump. It's all very well replacing electrical brushes and flexible seals, but the pump components themselves wear. We routinely replace oil pumps which have the same working parts. But fuel pumps? Nobody makes/sells them. I really question the value in just replacing parts because they're available. Maybe when the pumps were in their youth it might have had some value. But now? Surely we should be trying to replace the parts that actually wear over long mileages. Instead we use pumps unsuited to the application (Bosch and the like which deliver unnecessarily high flow rate).

Does anyone have a pristine original we could create a CNC pattern from?

@super6al @JohnC Alan and John, I took a punt on the rebuild kit as it was about £20 cheaper than the usual suspects but to my disappointment it wasn’t worth it, I refitted the original bushes back in as the new ones were all ground to weird pointy angles and it sounded really rough, the actual pump O rings did need replacing as they were hard. I did as much as I could with it but it doesn’t exactly sound powerful. I will swap it over with the one in the car to see if it’s any different but I’m not holding my breath. Utterly cheesed off with it all.

I’ve just got to decide what I’m going to replace it with and it’s probably not going to be Lucas.

Back in the 80’s we loved (hated) selling rebuild kits for PI equipment.  We would sell the kits and a fortnight later we got the complete units back for service exchange either in bits with new parts fitted or just assembled loosely.

Owners returning units for exchange we were always cautious of, especially if they mentioned they had bought a rebuild kit.   That is why the Moss spares catalogue used to list what must be included in an exchange item and the unit’s weight. We had a PIB (product information bulletin)  demonstrating what was acceptable.   Too often the owner stripped the unit and could not get the rotors or armatures back in so just left them out of their reassembled old unit.

FWIW I still have a couple of Lucas pumps at least one supposedly rebuilt though many years ago, if you would like them for parts. FOC just cover postage.

I always wonder why no one tried to replace the original Lucas wiper motor with a more modern and more powerful permanent magnet motor after all the pumps cant be that difficult to machine up new parts for surely and a combination of the two would draw less current as it wouldnt be working so hard therefore less heat going into the fuel or am I way off. PI not really my department.?

Thanks Stuart that’s very kind of you but I think I’m done with Lucas pumps.
