Nylen - the stag gearbox is essentially the same outer shape and size as a TR one and the OD's are the same set up - where the stag box differs is internally where it has a much stronger laygear and bearing arrangement - after all, if you think about it, it had the most powerful engine in the Stag as standard in the Triumph range, so one would expect a beefed up gearbox. Its a well trodden upgrade popular with many TRers but not so with Stag enthusiasts - the main TR gearbox guys lite Pete Cox Sportscars or ORS in Sheffield can probably supply a suitably converted unit if you can supply a core unit. PriceLes Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 (edited) Apparently the Stag input shaft is longer as is the bearing retainer spigot length. You then have possible other items, metric and imperial bearings in the input shaft to suit the metric or imperial spigot on the main shaft. The laygear went to a 17 tooth 1st at some stage (16T previously with a main shaft gear to suit) The added needle roller bearing is more of a bandaid as a modification to the existing part. Perhaps the TR input shaft can be used with its corresponding 4th gear but that depends on the main shaft which had an imperial or metric bearing in the input shaft to suit. There is a sleeve and caged bearing to increase the OD to suit one of the input shafts but not sure which one. The gears got steel bushes at some stage but that might be across the board (2500 gearbox) The so called upgrades were juggling parts in the same space and components it seems. (The Stag input shaft might also have a 1 inch spline (1-1/4 on the TR) being described as ‘skinny on the internet) Edited July 8 by PriceLes Quote
PriceLes Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 I bought a triple bearing laygear (16T 1st along with new input shaft and 4th gear, new 2nd gear pair and as new 1st/2nd-3rd/4th synchro hubs) and corresponding main gear and now wonder if the later thrust bearings can be added even if the gearbox case needs alterations.
