armstrong whitworth Posted July 8 Report Posted July 8 TR6 CP PI question: What is the function of the soldered collar on the longer choke cable? Where is meant to sit when fitting the cable? The attached images should explain what I'm referring to. Background: after 30+ years of ownership, I decided to tackle the issue of replacing the tatty old choke cable fitted to my car. It had the non-standard round knob and the inner cables were badly frayed at the end, making it impossible to adjust them. Having read the WSM and Haynes manual, it appeared a straightforward job (I never learn), with the long cable running to the excess fuel lever and the shorter one to the butterflies. However, the longer cable on the replacement unit has a soldered collar. Checking online, all the major suppliers' choke cables also have the same collar. I can't work out what its purpose is and how it should be fitted in relation to the other components in the system. The manuals do not mention it and I can't find any mention of it online (including on the Forum). I can appreciate that it could be intended to restrict range of movement but can't see how it should be set up to achieve that. The old cable I removed did not have a collar. I'm aware of the argument that the cable to the butterflies can be deleted and the throttle controlled on start up using the accelerator but want to stick with the twin cable set up, at least for now. I'm probably missing something really simple here but rather than keep pulling my remaining hair out, I thought it was time to ask the Forum. For completeness' sake, it's worth adding that I have a Revington overhead throttle kit fitted (which has been there for 25+ years) but I can't see that having any bearing on the issue. Thanks for reading this far! Quote
TR NIALL Posted July 9 Report Posted July 9 That Cable part your showing in the Pic with the nipple soldered onto it goes to the Metering Unit the threaded part your holding is part of the Choke Adjustment mechanism. Quote
armstrong whitworth Posted July 9 Author Report Posted July 9 Hi Niall Thanks - that makes sense. I was working on some information in an old hardcopy catalogue which implied that the longer cable connected to the metering unit and the shorter one (with that soldered collar/nipple) to the fast idle cam. This made some sort of sense in terms of the cable to the metering unit having to loop over the engine but no sense in terms of where it placed the coller/nipple. If only the WSM and catalogues showed the installed cable on the metering unit, in the way your picture does! Many thanks for a fast and helpful response. Quote
