Rob W Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 Hi all. A question about bonnets. The white one I have taken off my car. The red one I bought to repair the white one, however looking at them there are structural differences. I have read on another forum that the tr5 had the receivers for the bump stops near the scuttle and angled support brace? Which is the correct one for a 1962 car. Also the cross brace, there is a significant gap underneath both. Is this normal? Quote
Ransomes256 Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 The red one is correct for a TR4 the other is for a 4A or 5 as the brace is set over to avoid the wider radiator. Neil Quote
BRENDA1 Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 Hi Rob your white bonnet is the same as the bonnet on my TR4a 1966, i think you red one is from a TR 4. Mike Redrose Group Quote
Chilliman Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 The red one is from an early TR4 but if yours is early 1962 it should have a short bulge bonnet Quote
Rob W Posted April 29 Author Report Posted April 29 All thank you. Looking at photos of the car when I first bought it, the paint other than the bonnet has survived pretty well which makes me think it's been replaced. Good job I inadvertently bought the right one Quote
TR4Tony VC Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 Hi if the red one is sufficiently better you can remove and relocate the strengthening bar by drilling out the spot welds and put welding it in the right position, and similarly remove the bonnet buffers in the back corners again by removing the spot welds and plug welding any holes that remain. all doable at home. regards Tony Quote
Malbaby Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 Both longitudinal braces are out of shape. Assuming you intend to use the red one, I would remove the brace and shape it correctly before plug welding it back in. I would also strengthen the bonnet...eg. plug welding in strips on the inside of the sides🫤...This assists in eliminating the bends that occur as seen on the rear of the white bonnet....There are also other measures. Obviously need to be very careful when repairing the bonnet to avoid any twisting. Quote
