Ian Squire Posted April 19 Report Posted April 19 My TR8 (US import) is leaking oil from the front crankshaft seal that is located in the front of the timing cover. The part needed is ERC7987A which is available for £5 or so. However for the garage to fit it there is a £300+ bill. Does anybody have experience of this seal from various suppliers? If there is a 'better' seal for a bit more money then I'd like to go down that route, last thing I want is a new leaking seal. Thanks. Quote
jerrytr5 Posted April 19 Report Posted April 19 The seal is such a common part difficult to imagine too many variations. Maybe get one from a supplier with high turnover so it hasn't hardened with age? While the cover is off, check the dizzy drive gear - it wears. Jerry Quote
BlueTR3A-5EKT Posted April 20 Report Posted April 20 If, when the front pulley is removed there is a groove worn in the surface where the seal runs you should consider fitting a Speedi-Sleeve. The garage doing the job should know what that is. The pulley seal area needs measuring accurately to get the right sleeve ordered, It may well be an Inch size rather than Metric. The other trick is to fit a 1/2-1 mm spacer in the hole where the seal fits to move the seal onto an unworn area of the pulley. Not dealing with a seal groove will probably see the seal fail again fairly quickly. https://cdn.skfmediahub.skf.com/api/public/0901d1968028ef33/pdf_preview_medium/0901d1968028ef33_pdf_preview_medium.pdf Quote

I replaced the the front seal on my 7V8 a couple of years ago. The hardest parts were removing the radiator for access, then removing the bolt that secures the front pulley. The trick I learnt from the net involved a breaker bar resting on the garage floor and turning the engine over against it to undo the bolt. Once the pulley is off it’s a simple matter to replace the seal, then torquing up that bolt again. The V8’s front cover doesn’t need to be disturbed. Quote
