Phil Read Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 I have just fit a new bonnet lock and bonnet catch to the car. The manual is not very clear as to how you align the two. It just talks about adjusting the spring. before I shut the bonnet and find it jams down has any one any tips. thanks in advance. Quote
stuart Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 Always fun. First make sure your bonnet rear rubber cones let the bonnet sit in exactly the right height and alignment before you start Lock part bolts to the bulkhead in one place only so thats not a problem. I connect the cable and pull it so the lock is completely open and mole grip it so its jammed in that position. Put a piece of masking tape across the receiving hole. Fit the spring pin to the bonnet but dont completely tighten it up to the bonnet, just enough so it will move around with some pressure, put some pencil lead over the head of the pin then carefully lower the bonnet till the pin touches the tape on the catch, that will give you an idea of where you need to move the pin till its in the very centre of the hole in the catch then tighten up the pin plate on the bonnet. Then its just a case of adjusting the pin length to get the bonnet to sit level with the bulkhead, Best just adjust it in a little at a time till it sits level with the scuttle and is held by the catch. Last of all try it up a rough road to see if it will unlatch itself. Always good to also fit an auxiliary means of opening it, there are a number of kits on the market to do this. Not as much as a drama on a 4/5/250 as by removing the headlight and the use of a broom handle will spring the catch but a real drama on a 6 as thats not an option. Stuart. Quote
Phil Read Posted April 29 Author Report Posted April 29 Thanks for that. fit it tried it and slowly adjusted the spring. Couldnt understand why the bonnet kept springing up. then I noticed the new lock had jammed open. I couldnt free it so removed it. The catch does not line up with the slot in the centre of the tube. I can twist the frame and it clicks back in the slot to its closed position but when you open it, it just jammes up again. looks like I will have to refit the old lock which was ok, but the spring had broken on the pin, hense a complete new units.
