Has anyone fitted a pair of gas struts for the TR6 bootlid and have any comments / recommendation ?  The Clark & Clark kit from USA is $60 +p&p.

But I'm reading the mounting brackets might need strengthening?

They also sell a bonnet lift kit for $99, again its a pair of struts & fixings but thats about all you get I think, no brackets. I'm thinking 2 struts shouldn't cost that much.

Any comments if you have these fitted ?

Thanks

Bob

Hi Bob - I have both. They work well and I was of the same mind about the cost of a pair of struts plus some fittings.

Having gone down the route of trying to source the correct struts, lengths, brackets etc etc I ended up biting the bullet and went for them.

As a point to note, if your bonnet hinges are worn they can push the bonnet lip forward a tad. Mine are fine luckily.

They are very handy and make lifting the bonnet a breeze and also there’s no bonnet stay getting in the way.

Would I buy them again if I didn’t have them fitted ?

Yes.

Thanks Jonny - kinda what I needed to hear.

For the bonnet ones, any tips on the fitting ? - inner wing needs drilling I presume.   And boot ones - did you beef up anything?

cheers

Just follow the instructions Bob - only tip is on the boot where the outside of the socket of the struts can catch a bit on the rubber seal. They flag this up in the instructions and suggest slightly bending out the upstand the seal sits on to give a bit of clearance.

You could also grind a bit of the outside of the socket, but either way, you’ll probably need a bit of clearance.

On the 6 it holds the bonnet up nice and square, rather than having a single point on the offside. This means it’s less likely to suffer any skewing over time if you have your bonnet up a lot (like I do).

Well this was an expense I’d didn’t factor for… reading the forum can lead to impulse purchases! :P

Ordered Friday, just seen the shipping confirmation in my inbox. I wonder how much I’ll get stung for import duty? Hopefully the belligerent orange potato won’t have had any impact on the rates yet.

Please post the final import costs as that will help others who come after you.

Me too after having a look at Jonny’s this week (thanks Jonny)

- You’ll pay 20% VAT on the full cost ( goods plus shipping)

- ONLY if the cost including shipping is over £135 - you pay duty @ 4.5%

-Royal mail will also charge an £8 handling/admin fee - and will collect the vat & duty

so if you bought both bootlid and bonnet kit total cost at todays exchange rate would be approx £208*     (* including a PayPal currency conversion fee)

Potential tariffs excluded!!!

shipping for one kit was $29.75 or $39.66 for both

Yes I was charged $39.66 shipping too. I’ll report back with the exact import costs when it washes up on our shores.

Just as a heads up, I filed approx 2mm off the hex nut on the near side boot strut and then cut a thread all the way to the bottom of the bit that goes into the existing threaded insert on the boot lid. It’s the bit that the original boot stay goes into. This has given me a bit more clearance on the boot rubber when closing.

If that sounds like gobbledygook you’ll understand when you get the kit - or pop up a message for clarification.

So my kit has just been delivered. Final mile shipment was via Evri… and I’ve not been charged any additional import costs (so far - the courier didn’t ask for any additional payment on the doorstep. If there are any I guess it would be an emailed invoice, but nothing has arrived as yet)

So total cost so far to me to get it landed here is $199.56 (£161.56 @ PayPal’s rate of £1 ~$1.24)

So they work, and work well. The instructions are clear, and it’s probably an hours job max to do both the boot and the bonnet.

(I also managed to get the carpets changed this weekend, even if my overbearing foreman kept checking up on me)

Hi GOO

got mine today - again by Evri - and like you have not recd any import duty or Vat payment request prior to delivery (which I had from Royal Mail  with the Goodparts rear hubs I got from the USA late last year)

Have you recd any vat/duty request since GOO?

Hi All

Thinking gas struts might be a good upgrade, esp after already fitting gas struts to my Streetwise bonnet and they work well.

But that car specific kit cost early £40’s from memory (late last year) so I’m thinking £170 is a bit steep and importing from the USA is abit of a no no at the moment. Plenty of struts available it’s just getting the right ones.

So just wondering if they guys who got the kit can tell us what the dimensions of the stuts are?

So Extended length, compressed length, the lift capacity and type of fittings?

Obvs they need to be able to lift a heavy TR6 bonnet, so no weaklings needed here. By the way does anyone know the lift force required to lift a T6 bonnet? All that would be needed is to lift the bonnet using a spring balance and see what the force was and then buy the appropriate gas struts.

Cheers   Keith
