Gentlemen

Tried to order some NGK6HS 7022 Spark Plugs from The Green Spark Plug Co this morning but they are out of stock and on extended delivery some time late March. I am possibly looking for another source. Is it possible to identify the fake/Chinese cr* p that is on the market ? .

Cheers Chris

TRGB sold me some at Malvern for an emergency replacement that they assured me came from NGK.

They've done a faultless 2000km since.

Just had an "interesting" experience with plugs in my TR4. Have just been running in a new stage-2 tuned 89mm engine and by stupid accident I started it off using long-reach plugs (as used on the TR6) rather than the standard length TR4 spec.

More specifically, the plugs I used were the new-fangled 'triple electrode' variant. The actual plugs were BPR6ET (E for extended reach, T for triple electrode).

The potential for piston strike with a long-reach plug in a TR4 engine is widely reported, although I also picked up that some brave folk may actually have experimented with them, and survived it. I inadvertently seem to be among those survivors (phew).

On removing the BPR6ET plugs this week and replacing with the 'correct' BPR6HS, the car runs well enough however the throttle response is nothing like as sharp as with the long reach/triple plugs. The difference is very marked. My question now is - was the secret sauce due to the plug being further into the combustion chamber than standard, or the triple electrode? Or both?? (Mixture looks just right, and no change to timing).

If my semi-witted experiment is demonstrating a benefit from a longer reach plug, would it be sensible to re-fit the long-reachers but with washers to shim them back a bit?

What deck height are you using with the new 89mm pistons Nigel. If you've got a worked head and low deck height clearance it will squeeze the mixture swiftly across the chamber and that's definitely what the TR engine likes. The Triple electrode plugs are what Chris Marx always told me he was using, but I think the shorter reach, so it might be you've arrived at a symbiotic mix.

NGK have a great website dedicated to spotting the fakes, shows they are worried about them!

Thanks Mick.

I'll have another look with my motorsport mech guy tomorrow. We'll maybe try the long plugs again but shim them back a little for safety. We'll measure up the clearances as carefully as we can with the head on.

Still can't believe I was so stupid. My old faithful engine had had a head repair under previous ownership and pot four used a long-reach plug. Rush of blood to head when buying plugs for the new engine. I bought it newly built off Fleabay, a lovely fast road spec on paper and all looked right but knowing I was taking a big gamble and I don't know all the head working details etc, we just plonked it in without even taking the head off! The performance is all I'd hoped for so this is deffo my 'lucky engine'. :D

Thanks again.

Hi Nigel,

using longer spark plugs than the thread is deep

causes coal on the part of the plug that is reaching in cylinder.

And its construction is not made to burn the thread free from coal - as the electrodes.

Possibly this is why one day you will not get it out anymore.

And the part of the thread reaching in the cylinder does not cool the electrodes, so it will be hottern than wanted.

This is why I have been told always to use spark plugs wirth the correct length.

But at least from Bosch you can buy sone  plugs with variations of longer snd shorter electrodes.

Ciao, Marco

Thanks Marco. I guess the opposite problem is that a plug that's too short will attract carbon fouling to the exposed threads in the plug hole?

My car is a rally hack so has the plugs taken out fairly regularly, so maybe fouling on a long plug will be less of a problem.

I can recommend a Bosch WR78G Super4 to you.

Correct length, 4 electrodes, center electrode reaches 5 mm deep in the cylinder.

For 6 cylinders WR78X Super4

Last time I touched plugs like that with 4 earth contacts I was fitting them to a Pratt and Witney R1830

Thanks Marco. That WR78G Super 4 has the same thread length as an NGK6HS, 12.7mm. The long reach (both NGK and Bosch) are 19mm.

I take it they came ready gapped then? How would you gap a 4 electrode plug?

Correct, but always take the suitable please.

The Bosch plugs are for air cooled VW I think.   Certainly same as air cooled Fiat 500/600 series engine

Indeed we Germans still all drive air cooled Volkswagen

I show you later what the lable tells what they have been sold for.

Right are two KLG KS5 spark plugs from the 1930-ies, suitable for my Nortons with 3 ground electrodes.

Sadly they are M18, so they don't fit our TRs (for an experiment).

I was correct on the Fiat application.

I was wrong on the VW use then.

I tried to pickup a set of NGK BP5ES (6511) today for our TR6 and can’t find them anywhere except FleaBay, which I won’t trust anymore for them not being cheap Chinese tat. Anyone seen them anywhere recently as normally they’re quite easy to procure.

Otherwise I’ll polish up my current set with my Dremel for now.

Thank you Stuart, they’re out of stock there. $camazon seems to have them though I wonder about manufacturing site.

Or you could go to Champion N12yc as that’s the equivalent of BP5 they’re readily available ANG have stock
