My 58 TR3A has some leather straps in the spare wheel box. There is one which is supposed to hold the spare tools. One of the two brackets is on the side of the wheel compartment and I have just bought two stainless steel nuts and bolts to attach the bracket. There are two holes and one is easy to reach from inside and  the outside. The second one has a hole which only allows 1/4" for the new bolt to enter. I can not find any access to the outside. It is tempting to run a drill through the existing hole but I do not want to cause any proper problems and this bracket is not serious.

Does anyone have any experience of the rear body parts ??

When the TR problems come down to something like this it must mean that the car is in good condition. If anyone knows these panels please let me know.

Hi Richard,

there should be two cage nuts behind the holes (see pics). Original Screws were slotted and pointed.

The front one is accessible, the rear one isn't. (Just to show the prob to other readers.)

Thanks for the reply and the pictures. I was at a TR club meeting yesterday and there were some TR3A . I was able to inspect three and none had the bracket fitted  or any signs of captive nuts. Your picture makes it clear and I will now be looking for a correct thread Nutsert. If it is available and still called Nutsert.

Thanks Richard & B

Have you tried a tap through the hole you cant get access behind?

It is very hard to get a tap to start and not much room for the tools to turn it.  I think that I will go for a Nutsert and can use adhesive to hold it in if I can not find my special tool for collapsing  these inserts.

Use RawlNuts if you can’t find the pull up tool for the rivnuts.aka Nutserts.

Moss sell 566293 the Rawlnut and screw for the washer bracket of a TR6    That would do you nicely as it’s 10-32 unf size.

Peter, that seems to be a smart idea. Thank you!

Thanks Peter,

Should my new screws be 10-32 unf. I took a sample nut from the other bracket and the local store in Hove measured it as metric. I will be going back to them for a Nutsert soon  and will change the ones that I have. They are a very helpful supplier and not expensive.

The original threads in the body were 10-32 unf not metric.

Thank Triumph for utilising 5 of them on the TR6.   That caused me to resource them from a Rawlplig stockholder in UK.  I guess Moss are still using the same sourcing route.

Hi Richard

your Nutserts may well be metric.  Like the Rivnuts - Metric is far more popular in the UK..

Roger.

Not so much popular just the only ones readily available, I have to buy my Imperial rivnuts in from the US.

I now have a Nutsert which does work but is not a tight fit on the new screws. But because the strap is not under any load there is very little strain. It is very difficult compress the Nutsert so am planning to use  some 2pack adhesive while there is still sunshine and no rain.

This is a very small modification and there is no safety involved.

Thanks Richard & B

It all went well and some adhesive is holding the Nutsert.  It has taken two days to clean the glue off my fingers.  I am pleased to have drilled a hole in the Tr for the first time in ten years and it is in the right place. 🙂

I was planning a bank holiday run out but there is rain in Sussex which takes the edge off the fun. Maybe tomorrow ??

Thanks Richard & B
